Men's Basketball Drops 89-80 Decision At Kutztown Wednesday Night

KUTZTOWN, Pa. - Despite senior Ky Mauras (Reading, Pa./Reading) filling the box score, the Bloomsburg University men's basketball team dropped an 89-80 decision at Kutztown University on Wednesday night in a pivotal Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup at the Keystone Arena. The Huskies fell to 8-12 overall and 5-9 in the divisional standings while the Golden Bears improved to 9-11 and 7-7, respectively.

Mauras had a tremendous night as he poured in 25 points while adding ten rebounds, five assists, and a career-high tying five steals. He was 9-of-15 from the floor, 2-of-5 from long range, and a perfect 5-of-5 at the foul line. The effort was his second double-double of the season and was his third consecutive 20-point output - sixth in the last seven games - as he moved to within 53 points of becoming the newest member of the program's 1,000-point club.

Despite the effort, Keystone Arena once again proved unkind for the Huskies as Bloomsburg has dropped 19 consecutive meetings against the Golden Bears in Kutztown dating back to a 76-60 victory on February 10, 2001.

Three other Huskies finished in double figures on Wednesday night. Redshirt junior Max Wagner (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge), despite being plagued with foul trouble, had 12 points in 18 only minutes while redshirt senior Sam Saxton (York, Pa./Central York) and freshman Justin Anderson (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) chipped in with 11 points apiece.

Bloomsburg led by as many as six points - 13-7 - after a layup from Wagner with 14:40 left in the first half before the Golden Bears took advantage of a 23-4 run over the next seven minutes to take a 30-17 lead with 7:49 remaining in the opening twenty minutes. The spurt proved to be too much for the Huskies to overcome as the hosts never trailed the rest of the way.

When the dust settled to close the first half, Kutztown held a 41-32 lead as both teams headed to their respective locker rooms. Mauras led Bloomsburg with 11 first-half points.

The Golden Bears went on a 16-6 run to open the second half as they built a 19-point advantage - 57-38 - with 14:33 left in regulation. Freshman Jake Nelson (West Chester, Pa./West Chester Rustin) nailed a three-pointer on the next possession as Bloomsburg slowly began to chip away at the lead. The Huskies eventually cut the lead to single digits, 76-67, after a pair of foul shots from Saxton with 3:08 left and then trimmed the deficit to seven - 81-74 - after a triple from Anderson with just over a minute remaining.

But, Kutztown iced the game by going 8-of-10 at the foul line over the final 60 seconds to leave with the nine-point win.

Bloomsburg shot 34-of-77 (44.2%) from the floor but made only 4-of-18 (22.2%) from beyond the arc. The Huskies also struggled from the line as they converted 8-of-13 (61.5%) on the night. Kutztown, meanwhile, was 32-of-65 (49.2%) from the field and 6-of-23 (26.1%) from long range. The Golden Bears had a subpar night at the stripe as well as they went 19-of-31 (61.3%) but made them when they needed to down the stretch.

Tarojae Brake led Kutztown with 27 points and nine rebounds while Wesley Butler added 21 points in the win.

The Huskies will look to bounce back on Saturday afternoon, February 1, as they head to Millersville University for a PSAC East showdown against the Marauders. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
