Men's Basketball Wins Second Straight; Earns 87-75 Victory At East Stroudsburg Wednesday

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University men's basketball team put it all together on Wednesday night as it picked up its second straight victory with an impressive 87-75 win at East Stroudsburg University. The Huskies improved to 7-7 overall and 4-4 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division while the Warriors fell to 8-5 overall and 4-4 in the division.

After failing to reach double figures in scoring for the first time at the collegiate level on Monday night against Shepherd, freshman Justin Anderson (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) poured in a game-high 26 points - two points shy of his career-high - to pace the Huskies offensively. He was 8-of-14 from the field, 2-of-4 from three-point range, and 8-of-9 from the foul line on the night. Senior Ky Mauras (Reading, Pa./Reading) added 21 points, five rebounds, and six assists, while sophomore Travis Elmore (Tobyhanna, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) chipped 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Bloomsburg has struggled in recent memory against East Stroudsburg as it entered Wednesday's night's contest on a six-game losing skid against the Warriors and just one victory in the last 14 meetings between the two schools. The victory was Bloomsburg's first over the Warriors since a 91-84 win at East Stroudsburg on January 30, 2016.

Freshman Justin Rodriguez (Easton, Pa./Morristown-Beard) had his best game of his young collegiate career as he finished with nine points, six rebounds, and six assists - all career-highs - while junior Maqi Watson (Philadelphia, Pa./Mathematics, Civics, and Sciences Charter) added seven points, seven rebounds, and a career-high five blocked shots.

The Warriors led 5-4 early before the Huskies went on a 12-2 run to take a 16-7 advantage with 12:48 left in the opening half. Bloomsburg eventually built the lead to as many as 11 points - 29-18 - with just under seven minutes in the first stanza after a pair of foul shots from Anderson. But, East Stroudsburg would not go quietly as it chipped away at the Bloomsburg lead and the Huskies had to settle for a 41-39 advantage as the teams went to their respective locker rooms at halftime.

Anderson (12) and Mauras (9) combined for 21 of the Huskies' 41 first-half points while junior Ethan Houston (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) chipped in all six of his points on the night in the opening half.

The teams went back-and-forth over the course of the opening six minutes and, when the dust settled, East Stroudsburg had taken its largest lead of the night - 56-52 - with 13:44 remaining in regulation, But, the Huskies used another huge run - this time a 21-4 burst - over the next six minutes to turn the four-point deficit into a 73-60 advantage with 7:50 left. Anderson (10) and Mauras (7) combined to score 17 of the team's 21 points during the run with Elmore and Watson adding two points apiece.

East Stroudsburg cut the Huskies' lead to as few as six - 75-69 - with 4:35 remaining but a put-back from Elmore and a triple from Mauras in the next 74 seconds built the lead back up to 11 with just over three minutes left. Bloomsburg went 5-of-6 from the foul line down the stretch to seal the victory.

Bloomsburg had a strong shooting night as it went 30-of-54 (55.6%) from the field and 4-of-10 (40.0%) from beyond the arc. The Huskies, however, did their damage at the foul line as they posted a season-high 23-of-26 (88.5%) performance from the charity stripe on the evening. Bloomsburg also held a slim 42-39 edge on the glass and blocked a season-high 10 shots on the night. East Stroudsburg, meanwhile, was limited to 39.2% shooting (31-of-79), 25.0% (6-of-24) from deep, and 7-of-16 (43.8%) at the foul line. The Warriors did have 19 offensive rebounds which helped them to 25 more field goal attempts. They turned those offensive boards into 16 second-chance points.

Justin Paz led three East Stroudsburg players in double figures with 14 points off the bench.

The Huskies will look to extend their winning streak to three when they host Millersville University at the Nelson Field House on Saturday, January 11. The men's game will begin the hoops doubleheader against the Marauders with tip-off slated for 1:00 p.m.
