Women's Lacrosse Opens the Year with 13-9 Win Over Georgian Court

LAKEWOOD, N.J. – The Bloomsburg women's lacrosse team opened the 2020 campaign with a convincing 13-9 win over Georgian Court, Friday afternoon. The Huskies opened the year 1-0 while the Lions dropped to 0-1 for the year.

For the second-straight season, the Huskies opened their season against Georgian Court and pushed their winning streak over the Lions to 3-0.

Junior Anna Dempsey (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) got the Huskies on the board quickly with the first goal of the season just 1:12 into action. Bloomsburg won the initial draw but a turnover put the Lions on the attack. Junior Lana Paulo (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) caused a turnover and the Huskies completed their clear attempt and Dempsey struck first to give Bloomsburg a 1-0 lead.

The lead was short lived, however, as the Lions evened the scored just over two minutes later. Bloomsburg got two quick back-to-back goals, including freshman Kelsey Clauss's (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) first collegiate tally and freshman Kate Robert's first on a free position shot, to push its lead to 3-1 with 23:41 to play in the first half but Arianna Quinlan took advantage of an extra-man opportunity on a free position shot to cut the lead back down to one, 3-2, with 18:50 to play.

Georgian Court then posted back-to-back goals of its own, including a free position shot, to take its first lead of the game, 4-3, with 14:05 to play before the break. Sophomore Caitlin Leap (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) registered her first goal of the season on a free position shot to tie the game at 4-4 at the 13:20 mark and kicked off a three-goal run for Bloomsburg to push the lead to 6-4. Sabrina Chandler got one back for the Lions at the 9:05 mark but Dempsey tallied her second of the game with 7:10 to play to push the Husky lead to 7-5.

The Lions ended the half on a two-goal run to even the score at 7-7 after the first 30 minutes of game play.

Bloomsburg rattled off three-straight goals in the first 7:16 of the second half to extend its lead to 10-7. The Lions took the game's next three shots but senior Angela DiPasquale (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) stopped each attempt to keep the three-goal advantage for the Huskies.

The score held 10-7 in favor of the Huskies until the 15:25 mark when junior Allison Bardman (Barto, Pa./Boyertown Area) got on the board with a free position shot to give Bloomsburg an 11-7 lead. Junior Grace Kelleher (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) and junior Abby Bergman (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) posted back-to-back tallies for the Huskies with 6:58 to play to cap the scoring for Bloomsburg and push its lead to 13-7.

The Lions got their first goal of the second half with 4:35 to play to cut the lead to 13-8 and finished off the scoring with just 50 seconds to play to bring the score to its final 13-9.

Dempsey led the balanced attack for Bloomsburg with four goals while Kelleher had a pair of goals and a pair of assists. Clauss and Bergman each added a pair of goals as well while Leap, freshman Kate Roberts (Lehman, Pa./Lake Lehman), and Bardman added one tally.
