SETON HILL, Pa. - The Bloomsburg women's lacrosse team's comeback bid fell just short as the Huskies were edged by Seton Hill, 8-7, Wednesday afternoon. The Huskies even their record at 1-1 while the Griffins improved to 1-0 to open the season.
Junior
Abby Bergman (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) got the scoring going early for both teams and she rocketed home a shot off an assists from redshirt freshman
Grace Kelleher (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) just over four minutes into action to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. That advantage would be short lived, however, as Kristi Kada got her first of four tallies in the game just 12 seconds later after Emma Haley won the draw and gave the ball to Kada who went straight to cage.
Kelleher added one of her own after a turnover caused by junior
Anna Dempsey (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) gave possession back to Bloomsburg with 24:17 to play in the first half but the two teams traded the next two goals as sophomore
Erica Wolfgang (Morgantown, Pa./Twin Valley) got her first goal of the season with 13:11 to play. The Huskies led 3-2 with Wolfgang's tally but that would prove to be the last lead for Bloomsburg.
The Griffins closed out the half with two unanswered goals to take a 4-3 lead into the break.
Bloomsburg won the opening draw of the second half but a Husky turnover gave the ball back to the Griffins and Jaclyn Frank pushed her team's lead to 5-3 with 28:10 to play in regulation. The Huskies got the next three shots of the game off over the next four minutes but couldn't find the back of the net until Bergman collected her second goal of the game at the 23:12 mark, this time benefiting from an assist by freshman
Kelsey Clauss (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West), to trim the lead to 5-4.
The Griffins went on a three-goal run over the next 13 minutes, however, to push their lead to four, 8-4, with 11:34 left in regulation. Neither team could complete a clean possession over the next four minutes until senior
Cailyn Gormley (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) sent home her first goal of the year on a free position shot with 7:42 to play to cut the Griffin lead to 8-5.
Gormley quickly collected her second goal of the year just a minute later to pull her team within two, 8-6, and Clauss put the final touches on the scoring with her third of the young season with 2:13 left in regulation. Bloomsburg had a chance to tie the game with a free position shot with 1:45 to play but junior
Anna Dempsey's (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) shot was stopped Kamille Ward to preserve the one-goal lead. The Huskies had possession with 26 seconds but a turnover gave the ball back to the Griffins as they were able to run out the clock on the win.
Dempsey and Gormley finished with a pair of goals while Kelleher handed out two assists and scored once. Junior Allison won two of the Huskies four draw controls while senior
Angela DiPasquale (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) picked up eight ground balls and caused five turnovers, as did junioe
Tiffany Diachynsky (Barto, Pa./Boyertown Area).
In goal, DiPasquale made 11 saves in the loss while her counterpart Ward made eight in the win for Seton Hill. Bloomsburg was just 1-of-9 on free positions shots while the Griffins were just 1-of-6. With her third save of the game, DiPasquale hit the 500-save mark for her career and finished the game with 508 career stops.
Bloomsburg gets back to action next Tuesday as the Huskies come home for the first time this season against Lock Haven at 4:00 p.m. at Steph Pettit Stadium. The game against the Huskies will be the first game of the season for the Bald Eagles.
