Women's Lacrosse Holds on for 10-7 Win Over Lock Haven

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University women's lacrosse team survived four-straight Lock Haven goals at the end of the second half to hang on for a 10-7 win over the Bald Eagles, Tuesday afternoon. The Huskies improved to 2-1 on the year while Lock Haven opened the season 0-1.

With 24:07 left to play in the second and trailing 10-3, Lock Haven was awarded a free position shot but elected to run a play instead of taking the shot. Braxtin Reddinger got the ball to Karli Gilbret for her third tally of the game and cut the lead to 10-4 with 23:55 to play. That goal kicked off a 4-0 run for the Bald Eagles. The run did feature five saves by senior goalie Angela DiPasquale (Paramus, N.J./Paramus), however, that kept the Huskies in front.

Bloomsburg had the final possession and while the Huskies did not get a shot off, they were able to run out the final 51 seconds and hold on for the 10-7 win.

The Huskies raced out to a five 5-0 lead in the first seven and half minutes of action to open the game. Junior Abby Bergman (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) got the scoring started just over two minutes in with her fifth goal of the season thanks to an assist from junior Anna Dempsey (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts). Lock Have won the ensuing draw control but junior Allison Bardman (Barto, Pa./Boyertown Area) forced a turnover in the Huskies' defensive end and Bloomsburg was able to finish a clear quickly. Freshman Kelsey Clauss (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) picked up her fourth of the season and first of three in the game at the 26:58 mark to push the Bloomsburg lead to 2-0.

Lock Haven once again won the draw but Bloomsburg was able to force another turnover and turn the turnover into a goal as senior Cailyn Gormley (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) used an assist from Clauss to push the Huskies lead to 3-0. The Huskies won the draw following a time out by Lock Haven and Bergman got her second of the game, also from an assist from Clauss, as she pushed the lead to 4-0 with 25:53 to play in the first half.

With 23:24 left, Clauss assisted on her third straight goal, this time helping sophomore Kelsey Kilgallon (Spring City, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) find the back of the net.

Gilbert got her first of the game at the 22:14 mark to halt the Husky run and cut the deficit to 5-1. Just over three minutes later, sophomore Erica Wolfgang (Morgantown, Pa./Twin Valley) tallied her first of the year immediately after coming into the game. After another extending scoring drought, this time six scoreless minutes, Bergman extended the Bloomsburg lead to 7-1 at the 13:35 mark.

Clauss ended the scoring in the half for the Huskies at the 6:41 mark despite Bloomsburg down one player due to a yellow card. DiPasquale made a pair of saves in the final six minutes as Bloomsburg carried the 8-1 lead into the break.

Lock Haven scored quickly to open the second half to cut the lead to 8-2 but Clauss found the back of the net for the third time in the game to push the lead back to seven, 9-2. Reddinger and sophomore Abby Kalish (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) traded goals before the Bald Eagles closed out the game on a four-goal run.

Clauss led the Huskies with three goals and three assists while Bergman added three goals as well. Junior Tiffany Diachynsky (Barto, Pa./Boyertown Area) led the defense with five ground balls and caused five turnovers. Dempsey won four draw controls for the Huskies.

In the net, DiPasquale collected 13 saves in her second win of the season. DiPasquale also picked up a pair of ground balls.

Bloomsburg won eight draw controls and was 23-for-26 on clears.

The Huskies return to action on Friday when they travel to Wilmington, Delaware for a 3:00 p.m. contest against Wilmington.
