Box Score 2 BOWIE, Md. - The Bloomsburg University softball team got excellent pitching performances from juniors
Abby Wild (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) and
Tara Baney (Howard, Pa./Bellefonte) and the offense exploded for 26 runs in two games as the Huskies swept a doubleheader at Bowie State University on Saturday afternoon. Bloomsburg needed only five innings in both games - winning game one by a 14-0 final before taking game two by a 12-2 margin. The Huskies evened their record at 3-3 on the young season while the Bulldogs dropped to 2-9 on the year.
Wild went the distance in game one and struck out a career-high 12 batters while allowing only a one-out double to Breanna Harvey in the bottom of the second inning. At one point, Wild struck out seven consecutive batters and closed out the game by punching out eight of the last nine hitters she faced.
The junior righthander received all of the offense she would need as the Huskies scored three times in the top of the first and then blew open the game with seven runs in the visiting half of the second to take a 10-0 lead.
Sophomores
Erin DelPierre (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) and
Rebecca Rossi (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton Area), along with senior
Kelsey Impink (Perkiomenville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley), each scored first-inning runs for the Huskies as Bloomsburg took a 3-0 advantage. In the second, Bloomsburg hit for the cycle on four consecutive batters as part of its seven-run inning. Freshman
Tyler White (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) singled, DelPierre doubled, Rossi tripled, and Impink homered in four straight trips to the plate as the Huskies did all of their second-inning damage with two outs. Impink's round-tripper was the first hit by a Bloomsburg player this season.
The Huskies added two more runs in the top of the third as DelPierre and Rossi came around to score again. Then, after a scoreless fourth, Bloomsburg tacked on its final two runs in the top of the fifth as Impink and sophomore
Alexis Wetzler (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte) scored in the inning.
Wild improved to 2-2 on the season and has now struck out 35 batters in 22 innings of work on the year. The Huskies 1-2-3 hitters combined for nine runs and seven hits in the opener. Rossi led the way with three hits and three runs scored.
Game two provided much of the same as Baney was given plenty of early offense as she went the distance in the circle. The junior righthander struck out eight and allowed only two hits - both of which came during the Bulldogs' two-run fifth inning.
Baney was staked to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as DelPierre and Rossi, again, created havoc at the top of the order. Both came around to score with DelPierre and redshirt junior
Nicolette Ray (Abington, Pa./Abington) providing first-inning hits.
The Huskies added four runs in the second as DelPierre, Rossi, Impink, and sophomore
Sammi Starr (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area) had four consecutive hits during the inning. Rossi scored again in the top of the third on a double from Impink as Bloomsburg built up a 7-0 lead through three.
In the fourth, senior
Ashli Venokur (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) and sophomore
Paige Thomas (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) started a four-run rally with back-to-back singles. White kept the inning alive - following a pair of outs - with a single that brought both runners home for a 9-0 advantage. DelPierre and sophomore
Annika Gemberling (Denver, N.C./East Lincoln) reach on consecutive walks and then a costly error accounted for other two Huskies' runs in the frame.
Bloomsburg added a final run in the fifth on a run-scoring double by Thomas as she plated Venokur.
Again, it was the 1-2-3 hitters that set the tone in game two as DelPierre, Rossi (Gemberling in the fourth), and Impink combined for six hits and six runs. White also had a single and scored twice from the nine-spot in the order.
The Huskies will be back in action on Tuesday, March 3, when they head to Delaware to take on the Lightning of Goldey-Beacom in a twinbill. First pitch of game one is slated for 2:00 p.m.
