Baseball Scores Late In Game One, Early In Game Two; Sweeps Davis & Elkins Sunday Afternoon

CLARKSBURG, W. Va. - Six proved to be the Bloomsburg University baseball team's lucky number on Sunday afternoon as the Huskies used a six-run seventh inning in game one and a six-run second inning in game two to sweep Davis & Elkins College at Frank Loria Memorial Field. Bloomsburg earned a 6-2 win in game one and then completed the sweep with a 6-1 victory in game two to improve to 5-1 overall on the season. The Senators suffered their first losses of the season as they dropped to 3-2 on the year.

The opener featured a pitching duel between Bloomsburg senior Chad Cooperman (Allentown, Pa./Salisbury) and Davis & Elkins senior Brent McMillion as both hurlers got through the first two innings unscathed.

However, the Senators grabbed a 1-0 advantage with a single run in the bottom of the third on an RBI single from Tanner Wickham as he plated Alex Castaneda who reached on a one-out infield single.

The Huskies had a chance to tie in the top of the fifth as junior Jake Reed (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) reached on a one-out single and then advanced to second on a groundout. Redshirt sophomore Carter Chasanov (Magnolia, Del./Polytech) laced a single to center but Reed was thrown out at the plate by Davis & Elkins centerfielder Justin Worley to end the frame. The Senators built off of the momentum by tacking on another run in the home half of the fifth to take a 2-0 lead after an RBI single from Gabriel Patxot that brought home Worley.

It remained a 2-0 Senator lead until the top of the seventh when the Huskies finally solved McMillion.

Senior Cole Swiger (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) led off with an infield single and then advanced to second on a single from redshirt junior Christian Ciotti (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township). Senior Gianni Sinatore (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) followed with a ground-rule double that scored Swiger to cut the deficit to 2-1. Senior Andrew Holmes (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Egg Harbor Township) then whistled a two-run double to right center field to give the Huskies their first lead of the game, 3-2, and to end the afternoon for McMillion. The Senators brought Max Larimore out of the pen but the Huskies were not done as back-to-back walks to juniors Ben Newbert (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Harriton) and Jared Burcin (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) loaded the bases with one out. Junior Kyle OFier (Pittston Township, Pa./Pittston Area) singled down the right field line to bring home Holmes and Newbert and then sophomore Anthony Viggiano (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) singled to drive in Burcin for the final run of the inning.

When the dust settled, the Huskies turned a 2-0 deficit into a 6-2 lead as Bloomsburg brought 11 batters to the plate and scored six runs on six hits and two walks.

Cooperman came out to finish the game in the bottom of the seventh for the Huskies and pitched around a two-out hit batsman for the complete-game victory.

The senior righthander improved to 2-0 on the season as he allowed two runs on four hits while walking two and striking out five. McMillion was sensational through six innings but was charged with four of the six runs in the Huskies' seventh and was tagged with the loss to fall to 1-1 on the year. He gave up four runs on ten hits in six innings, walked one, and struck out four.

Bloomsburg out-hit Davis & Elkins, 12-4, in game one. All ten position players for the Huskies had at least one hit in the victory with Chasanov and OFier collecting two hits apiece to lead the way.

Junior Nick Stoner (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) took the mound in game two and was staked to a 6-0 lead when Bloomsburg plated all six of its runs in the second inning against Davis & Elkins starter McKinley Scott.

Viggiano led off the inning with a single and then advanced to second on a walk to junior Jared Schram (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North). Burcin singled to load the bases and then Swiger brought home the first run of the inning with a bases-loaded walk to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Cooperman drew another bases-loaded free pass which ended Scott's afternoon. Marcos Feria was summoned from the Senator bullpen but was greeted rudely by Chasanov who laced a two-run double to score Swiger and Burcin for a 4-0 lead. Two batters later, Newbert singled down the left field line which scored Cooperman and Chasanov for the inning's final runs.

The Senators got a run back in the home half of the second on an RBI double from John Arcaro which scored Luis Diaz who reached on a one-out error.

That proved to be the final run of the nightcap as Feria settled down for Davis & Elkins and Stoner remained in complete control for the Huskies.

Stoner improved to 2-0 on the young season with his second consecutive brilliant start to begin the year. After striking out a career-high 13 batters in his first start last Sunday against Virginia State, Stoner allowed only an unearned run on three hits with one walk and 11 punchouts against the Senators. Through two appearances, Stoner has allowed only one earned run on six hits in 14 innings while striking out 24. Opponents are hitting just .125 against the junior righthander.

Scott dropped to 0-1 for the Senators as he allowed five runs on three hits and three walks in an inning-and-a-third. Feria did a nice job in relief as he was charged with one run on three hits, one walk, and six strikeouts in five-and-two-thirds innings.

The Huskies had six hits in game two - two from Chasanov.

Bloomsburg will be back in action next Saturday and Sunday, March 7 and 8, when it heads to Goldey-Beacom for a pair of doubleheaders against the Lightning. Both twinbills start at 12:00 p.m.
