BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University field hockey team battled for more than 60 minutes with the #3-ranked Millersville Marauders Tuesday night but Millersville scored the golden goal just 32 seconds into the first overtime to escape an upset and win 1-0 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action. The Huskies fell to 7-8 on the year and 1-6 in PSAC play while the Marauders improved to 12-2 for the year and 5-2 in conference play.
Â
Today's game marked Bloomsburg's fourth overtime game of the season and the Huskies are now 2-2 in extra time.
Â
The Marauders led 12-6 in shots for the game and held a 12-6 advantage in penalty corners.
Â
With the score knotted a 0-0, the Huskies were awarded a penalty corner with 3:39 to play in regulation. Sophomore
Alicia Carr (Shickshinny, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) ripped a shot on cage but Kerstin Koons was there to make the stop and preserve her shutout.
Â
Bloomsburg had one final shot in the final 33 seconds with another penalty corner but were unable to get a shot off and the game went into overtime.
Â
The Marauders were awarded a penalty corner just 14 seconds into action but the Huskies cleared any scoring chance. Millersville drew another foul in the circle just 12 seconds later and set up its second penalty corner. This time Bri Harsh inserted the ball for Hannah Brown who took an initial shot that junior goalie
Abby Shaffer (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) kick saved back into the field of play. Brown collected her own rebound and shot the ball just out of the reach of Shaffer's left foot and scored the game-winner 32 seconds into action.
Â
The Huskies had one of their best chances in the game as they put three straight shots toward the cage midway through the third quarter. Both graduate student
Alyssa Broadt (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg Area) and junior
Sydney Derr (Fogelsville, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) had a shot on goal that was saved by Koons and Broadt's second shot of the quarter was blocked to keep the Huskies off of the board.
Â
The Marauders appeared to have a goal early in the first quarter but it was waived off due to a foul.
Â
Bloomsburg and the Marauders have played in three-straight 1-0 games, with BU and VILLE splitting the last two meetings.
Â
Shaffer made seven saves for the Huskies while Koons need just three for the win.
Â
Bloomsburg returns to action on Saturday, October 23 as the Huskies head to Slippery Rock University for a 2:00 pm PSAC contest.
