BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University women's soccer team continued its winning and shutout streak of five games with a 1-0 win over Shepherd University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East contest, Wednesday evening. With the win, the Huskies improved to 10-3-1 on the year and 9-2-1 in conference play, while the Rams dropped to 2-9-1 for the season and 1-9-1 in PSAC action.
The Huskies have now posted five-straight shutouts and extended their scoreless streak to 531:42 minutes, dating back to the first half against Kutztown two weeks ago.
Huskies' sophomore
Lauren Bull (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) had her second BU career start and picked up the game's only goal tonight against Shepherd for the 1-0 win. Bull received a corner kick from graduate student
Natalie Holmes (Laurel, Md./Archbishop Spalding) to put up a header shot but was blocked by a Rams defender. Bull was there to collect the rebound and put the ball in the net just to the left of the goalie's reach. This goal gives Bull back-to-back game-winning goals as she picked up the game-winning goal against Mansfield, 1-0, Saturday evening.
Bloomsburg started the first half off with a shot from Bull in the first 2 minutes of play but was shot high. The Huskies had another scoring chance, 5 minutes after Bull's attempt, off a corner kick from Holmes that put the ball in perfect position for junior
Abby Groff (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) to get a header shot on goal; but was saved by Rams goalie Lulu Fricks and she picked up her first save of the game.
The Huskies kept the ball rolling and picked up another six shots total, where their Ram counterparts had zero shots on goal. Bull added another shot, where her teammate junior
Campbell Power (Souderton, Pa./Souderton Area)s picked up two shots, and Groff added two on goal. Huskies senior
Helen Flynn (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) added the final header shot on goal after a corner kick from Holmes, and Frick picked up her fifth save to close out the half.
The Huskies kept their momentum going in the second half as they added 14 more shots to add to their previous eight shots in the first half for a total of 22 shots, where the Rams failed to put a shot on goal.
Groff led the Huskies with four shots on goal, and following closely behind, her teammate, Powers, picked up three shots on goal. Flynn and Bull both added one shot on goal, each for the Huskies.
The Huskies controlled the pace for the remainder of the game but failed to put another goal on the net and settled for the 1-0 win against the Rams.
Bloomsburg women's soccer posted a clean sheet against Shepherd as they led in 22-0 shots, 11-0 corner kicks. Shepherd goalie had an impressive eight saves, while Bloomsburg goalie sophomore
Alexa Ryan (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) did not need to make a save for the Huskies to secure the win.
The Huskies return to action on Saturday as they host Lock Haven University for their senior day game and will host the Bloomsburg Trappers soccer club. The opening kick-off is set for 7:00 pm.
