KUTZTOWN, Pa. - With less than five minutes to play in regulation, Kutztown University scored to break a 1-1 tie and hand the Bloomsburg University women's soccer team just its fourth loss of the season, and first since September 29. On Wednesday, the Golden Bears hung on to win 2-1 over the Huskies in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East action. With the loss, the Huskies dropped to 11-4-1 for the year and 10-3-1 in PSAC East play, while the Golden Bears improved to 14-1 for the year and 12-1 in conference action.
After a scoreless first half, the Golden Bears finally broke the nil-nil tie as Rebekah March scored in the 57th minute with her first goal of the season. The Huskies defense played the ball back to sophomore goalie
Alexa Ryan (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) who attempted to clear it away. The clear attempt was intercepted by March, who was able to sneak it over Ryan.
Bloomsburg didn't back down and continued to test the Kutztown backline. Sophomore
Lauren Bull (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) ripped a shot in the 66th minute, but it went out just to the right of the goal. With 31 minutes to play in regulation, the Huskies earned a penalty kick, and graduate student
Natalie Holmes (Laurel, Md./Archbishop Spalding) put a corner kick perfectly in front of the net for the Huskies offense. After deflecting a Kutztown defender, sophomore
Brooke Foster (Cherry Hill, N.J./Camden Catholic) got a toe on the ball and poked it past the KU goalie to tie the game at 1-1 at the 69:19 mark.
The Huskies weren't satisfied and continued to shoot but couldn't get an advantage. Bull and freshman
Aubrey Hondros (Richboro, Pa./Council Rock South) took a shot that went wide, and junior
Campbell Power (Souderton, Pa./Souderton Area) took a shot that just missed.
With over five minutes to play, the Kutztown offense disrupted the Huskies from clearing the ball from just outside the box, and Brittany Arentz tapped the ball to Joslyn Stoltz, who tucked it in right under the crossbar for the 2-1 lead for Kutztown.
Hondros got a final shot off with 1:11 to play, but the Golden Bears hung on for the 2-1 win.
The Huskies out-shot the Golden Bears 13-4, including a slight 3-2 advantage in shots on goal. Bloomsburg held a 3-1 lead in corner kicks as well.
Emme Wolfel finished the day with a pair of saves for the win.
Next week, the Huskies get back to action as they host #21, West Chester, for their regular-season home finale. The Golden Rams are currently No. 2 in the conference standings while the Huskies are holding on to the No. 3 spot. Game time is set for 7:00 pm at Steph Pettit Stadium.
