#9 Field Hockey Defeats Frostburg State 2-1, Sunday Afternoon

FROSTBURG, Md. – The #9 Bloomsburg University field hockey team got back into the win column Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 victory over Frostburg State University. With the win, the Huskies improve to 7-3 for the year while the Bobcats drop to 1-9 for the season.

Trailing 1-0 at the half, the Huskies came out firing in the third quarter as senior Foto Tsioles (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) and freshman Aydan McFarland (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg Area) each got a shot off in the first three minutes of action. After junior Abby Shaffer (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) made a save at the other end of the field, the Huskies earned a penalty corner at the 36:43 mark. Bloomsburg took advantage and set up their offense. Freshman Kara Koch (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg Area) inserted the ball into the circle and senior Kristen Robinson (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area) tipped it back to junior Carlee Williams (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin). Williams put a hard pass toward the cage for Koch who was positioned perfectly to receive the pass and shoot it past the Bobcat goalie.

The Huskies had two more chances on cage in the third quarter but could not capitalize and the two teams went into the final period tied 1-1.

Bloomsburg earned a penalty corner just 24 seconds into the fourth but McFarland's shot was stopped by the Bobcat goalie, Madison Manalansan. After three more penalty corners did not develop into a goal for the Huskies over the next five minutes, Bloomsburg broke the tie with less than nine minutes to play.

A penalty corner at the 51:09 mark was inserted by Tsioles and sophomore Alicia Carr (Shickshinny, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) tipped the ball back to sophomore Emily Swineford (Mt. Pleasant Mills, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) for the goal.

Bloomsburg had two more chances to incease their lead in the final seven minutes of play but settled for the 2-1 win.

The Bobcats got on the board quickly in the first scoring the game's first goal just 1:32 into action but the Huskies took over the pace of play after that.

Robinson finished the day with a team-leading four shots while freshman Bella Culp (Dauphin, Pa./Central Dauphin) and McFarland each had three. The Huskies out-shot the Bobcats 21-3, including a 14-2 advantage in shots on goal.

Shaffer needed one save for her seventh win of the season while Manalansan made 11 saves in the loss for Frostburg.

The Huskies get back to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action on Tuesday when they host East Stroudsburg University for a 4:00 pm contest at Steph Pettit Stadium.
