Women's Basketball Downs Wheeling for First Win of the Season

WHEELING, PA- The Bloomsburg University women's basketball team got right back on the road Sunday afternoon as the Huskies finished out the 2021 Carol Eckman Conference Challenge at West Chester University. After a close game and tough loss, the Huskies were able to pick up their first season win against Wheeling University, 74-60. With the win, the Huskies improve to a 1-1 for the year while the Cardinals dropped to 0-2 for the year.
 
The Huskies shot 52.8% from the floor for the game, including a 9-for-13 (69.23%) effort in the opening quarter. The Huskies out-rebounded the Cardinals 36-34. Bloomsburg was 5-for-12 from beyond the arc. The Bloomsburg defense held the Cardinals to a 39.4% shoot day from the floor (26-for-66) including a 6-for-20 day from the three-point line.
 
Graduate student Emma Saxton (York, Pa./Central York) led the team with 20 points while three other Huskies hit double figures. Freshman Samantha Brusha (Abington, PA/Abington) finished the day with her second-straight double-digit effort with 14 points while Katelin Starr (Berwick, PA/Berwick) added 10 and Meghan Corridoni (Exeter, Pa./Holy Redeemer) posted 11 points.
 
Saxton also led the team with seven rebounds while sophomore Emma Gouchnauer, Megan Fisher (New Holland, Pa./Garden Spot), and Nya Johnson (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) all dished out three assists for BU.
 
The Huskies led 20-15 after the first quarter and pushed their lead to eight going into halftime with a 36-28 lead. The Huskies maintained their lead for the rest of the game and pushed it to 17 with 3:01 to play in the third as Allison Hileman (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) hit a three-pointer thanks to an assist from Brusha.
 
The Huskies took their largest lead of the game with a 21-point advantage with 4:46 to play as Brusha finished out an and-1 to give BU a 70-49 lead. The Cardinals would not go away and chipped away at the lead until they got back to within 14 with 1:01 to play in regulation. A couple missed layups down the stretched sealed the 74-60 win for BU.
 
Bloomsburg gets right back on the road Wednesday as the Huskies face Holy Family University for a 6:00 pm game in Philadelphia, Pa.
