Groff Nets Game Winner in Overtime; Women's Soccer Advances in NCAA Tournament

BECKLEY, W. Va .- With 3:45 to play in the first overtime, junior Abby Groff (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) scored her third game-winning goal in the last four games as she sent the Bloomsburg University women's soccer team to the NCAA Tournament second round with a 2-1 overtime win over Gannon University. With the win, the Huskies improved to 16-4-2 on the year while the Golden Knights end their season at 12-4-3.

The Golden Knights took the first three shots of the overtime period, though none were on target. With 4:29 to play, Gannon was issued a yellow card that turned into a red since it was the second on the same player and the Golden Knights were forced to play a woman down. Holmes' free kick went into the box and Bloomsburg maintained possession until senior Paige Harris (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) tapped the ball to Groff who one-timed it past the Gannon goalie to win the game for Bloomsburg in the 97th minute.

Gannon scored the game's first goal way back in the fifth minute of action as Sarah Fails scored the game's first goal from atop the 18-yard box. It was the first goal allowed by sophomore Alexa Ryan (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) in five games.

The two teams battled closely for the next 40 minutes as shots were hard to come by. The Huskies finally found their equalizer in the 43rd minute.

With just 2:21 left in the first half, the Huskies drew a hard foul inside the 18-yard box and were awarded a penalty kick. Graduate student Natalie Holmes (Laurel, Md./Archbishop Spalding) got the call to take the PK for the fourth time this season. Holmes is nothing if not consistent at the penalty spot and drilled a low shot into the far corner of the net as the goalie dove the other way and tied the game at 1-1 for BU.

The goal sparked the Huskies offense and BU ripped a pair of shots in the first five minutes of the half. Senior Nicole Varano (Mt. Carmel, Pa./Mt. Carmel) first shot of the half was blocked by the Golden Knight's defense in the 50th minute before sophomore Lauren Bull's (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) shot from about 20 yards out when out just to the right of the goal.

Ryan made a huge leaping save with in the 61st minute as Taylor Lewis' shot looked like it was going to tuck in under the crossbar. Ryan punched the shot up and over the net to keep the game tied at 1-1.

With 15 minutes to play in regulation, the Golden Knights had a dangerous opportunity as Jamie Seneca put the ball into the box from outside the 18 as Ryan was pulled off the goal line but Seneca's shot was blocked by Holmes and cleared away by the defense.

The Huskies had a chance with 1:22 to play in regulation and Varano got her head on the Holmes' corner kick but it went right into the lap of the Golden Knights' goalie, Kennedy Solymosi.

As time was expiring, Solymosi made one of the biggest saves of the game as Varano ripped a shot from 25-yards out. Solymosi drove and just got her hands on the ball to knock it out as the final horn sounded for regulation.

The Huskies out-shot Gannon 17-11 had held a 8-5 advantage in shots on goal. Bloomsburg held a slim 4-2 lead in corner kicks for the game. Varano led the team with six shots, two on target, while Lewis led Gannon with five shots, two on goal.

Ryan finished the day with four saves while her GU counterpart, Solymosi made six saves in the game.

The Huskies continue on to the next round of the NCAA Tournament and will face the winner of the No. 2 Concord/No. 6 Mercyhurst game. The second-round game is slated to take place in Berkley, W. Va. And will kickoff at 3:00 pm.
