Women's Basketball Wins Second-Straight Defensive Battle with its 58-44 Victory Over Slippery Rock

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – For the second straight game, the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team came out on the right end of a defensive battle against a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opponent as the Huskies downed Slippery Rock University, 58-44, Saturday evening. With the win, the Huskies improved to 4-3 and moved to 2-0 in PSAC action while the Rock fell to 5-2 for the year and 1-1 in conference play.

For the second-straight night, the Huskies snapped their opponents five-game winning streak and held their opposition to a season-low in points and shooting percentage. Slippery Rock came into the contest on a five-game winning streak and averaged 72.4 points per game in its first seven games. The Huskies held the Rock to just 44 points, dropping their average to 68.9 points per game and a season-low 25.4% shooting day (18-for-71) from the floor. The Huskies forced 16 turnovers and turned them into 17 points.

Bloomsburg was led on both sides of the court by graduate student Meghan Corridoni (Exeter, Pa./Holy Redeemer) with her third double-double of the season. Corridoni finished with a season-high 16 rebounds and 20 points and went 6-for-6 from the free throw line. She had a season-best four blocks. Graduate student Emma Saxton (York, Pa./Central York) posted nine points and pulled down three rebounds while junior Emma Gochnauer (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) led the team with four assists and had seven rebounds. Freshman Katelin Starr (Berwick, PA/Berwick) posted eight points for the Huskies.

As a team, the Huskies shot 32.7% (18-for-55) from the floor and were 5-for-20 from three-point range. The Huskies went 17-for-26 from the free throw line. Bloomsburg narrowly edged out Slippery Rock 48-45 on the glass. Jamiyah Johnson led the Rock with 15 points and 15 rebounds while Kennedy Middleton chipped in nine points and eight rebounds.

Corridoni hit a jumper just inside the three-point line just 16 seconds into action after Bloomsburg won the opening tip off and the Huskies never trailed. Bloomsburg led by as many as eight points, 10-2, with 3:21 to play in the first, but Slippery Rock trimmed the lead to two, 10-8, with 2:12 to play. Bloomsburg made the last bucket of the quarter as Starr finished off a contested layup at the 2:02 mark to give BU a 12-8 lead.

The Rock opened the second quarter on a 5-0 run to get to within one, 13-12, at the 7:30 mark but freshman Julia Wheeler (Albion PA/Northwestern) hit a three on the Huskies next possession to push the hosts' lead back to four, 16-12. With 2:26 to play, freshman Allison Hileman (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) drained a three to give Bloomsburg its largest lead of the game to that point, 28-17. Anyah Curd ended the half with a three of her own and Bloomsburg took a 28-20 lead into halftime.

Corridoni was on the verge of her double-double at the break as she led the team with 10 points and nine rebounds after the first 20 minutes. She grabbed a defensive rebound off the Rock's first possession of the third to complete the double-double.

Bloomsburg eventually pushed its lead back to 11, 38-27, with 1:21 to play in the third thanks to a free throw from Starr before Bella Long hit a three to cut the lead back to eight, 38-30, with 1:06 to play. Starr ended the quarter with a jumper in the paint to give Bloomsburg a 40-30 lead with one quarter to play.

The Huskies did not need overtime heroics for the second-straight game as BU out-scored Slippery Rock 18-14 in the final 10 minutes to seal the 58-44 win.

After a week's break for finals, the Huskies return to action next Saturday as they travel to Jefferson University for a 2:00 pm non-conference contest.
