Lacrosse Earns Decisive 14-7 Win Over Shepherd

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va. – The Bloomsburg University lacrosse team earned its first win of the year as the Huskies traveled to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East opponent, Shepherd, and came away with a decisive 14-7 win over the Rams. With the win, the Huskies improved to 1-1 on the year while the Rams dropped to 1-1.

The Huskies used a balanced attack as eight different players recorded a goal and nine registered at least one point. Senior Anna Dempsey (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) led the charge with three goals and an assist while sophomore Kate Roberts (Lehman, Pa./Lake Lehman) scored three goals for Bloomsburg. Junior Kelsey KIlgallon added a goal and a pair of assists while sophomore Kelsey Clauss (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) dished out a team-best three assists as well. Senior Abby Bergman (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) and junior Abby Kalish (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) each had a pair of goals.

In net, graduate student Angela DiPasquale (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) made seven saves for Bloomsburg to pick up career-win number 33 and her first of the year.

Shepherd struck first with the opening goal of the game coming just 1:29 into action, but that 1-0 lead was short-lived as Bloomsburg rattled off the game's next five goals to take 5-1 lead, one the Huskies would not surrender. Dempsey got the scoring going with her team-leading sixth goal of the season at the 27:08 mark and Roberts followed not far behind with her first of the year thanks to an assist from Kilgallon to make it 2-1 in favor of the Huskies. Kilgallon then got one of her own as the Huskies were had a player-advantage and Kilgallon found the back of the net off a pass from Clauss with 19:48 to play in the first.

Freshman Amanda Stoll (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) capped the Husky run with her first of the year and her career thanks to another assist from Clauss.

The Huskies and Rams traded the next two goals for each team as senior Allison Bardman (Barto, Pa./Boyertown Area) and Roberts scored for Bloomsburg and the Huskies pushed their lead to 9-3 with less than 10 minutes to play in the opening half. Dempsey continued her hot streak with her seventh goal of the year with 3:34 left to play and gave Bloomsburg a 10-3 lead at the break.

The halftime break and chilly weather didn't cool down Bloomsburg as the Huskies came out firing in the second half. Sophomore Haley Williams (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) collected her first of the year thanks to Clauss just under seven minutes into action and kicked off a four-goal run for Bloomsburg.

Bergman, Roberts, and Kalish all got involved in the scoring run while Kilgallon and Dempsey helped it along with an assist each. The Huskies pushed their lead to a comfortable distance, 12-3, with 20:29 to play in the contest.

The Rams got three back in a span of five minutes from the 16:48 mark to 11:03 to cut the lead back down to 12-6, but Bergman's second of the game and Dempsey's third extended the Husky lead back to 14-6 with just over seven minutes to play.

Shepherd found the net one final time with 5:01 to play but that ended the scoring and Bloomsburg walked away with the 14-7 win.

Dempsey, Bergman, and Bardman all won three draw controls for Bloomsburg while senior Erika Biehl (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) caused a team-best two turnovers.

The Huskies will return home on Saturday, March 20 as they host Kutztown University for a. 2:00 pm game at Steph Pettit Field. Links for the live broadcast and live stats are available at www.buhuskies.com.
