Men's Tennis Drops 5-2 Decision to Mercyhurst

ERIE, Pa. – The Bloomsburg men's tennis team dropped a hard-fought battle to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West opponent, Mercyhurst, Sunday evening, 5-2. The Huskies fell to 0-2 on the year while the Lakers improved to 3-4 on the year and 2-0 in conference action.

The Lakers picked up the doubles point as the No. 1 and No. 2 partners earned victories. Senior Guille Carranza (Sevilla, Spain/Colegio Calasancio Hispalense) and sophomore Scott Redmond (Paget, Bermuda/Warwick Academy) defeated Hristo Plasheski and Kiran Richards at No. 3 doubles.

"I thought we played pretty solid doubles on both days. We have a few details to clean up this week," remarked head coach Rebecca Helt.

In the singles matches, both freshman Ben Clary (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area) and Carranza came away with victories for Bloomsburg.

Clary handled his opponent, David Akinpetide, well at No. 2 singles, winning by scores of 6-3, 6-2. Carranza dropped the first set at No. 6 singles, 6-1, but rebounded for a 7-6 win in the second set to tie the match. Carranza clinched the match with a 10-7 win in the tie break.

"Our execution in singles on Saturday was not where we need to be," continued Coach Helt. "We executed much better on Sunday, so it was good to see the guys make the adjustment. Now we just need to focus on finishing the points. Overall, not a bad start for our first matches in over a year."

The Huskies look to get into the win column on Saturday as they play at the Burt Reese Tennis Center for the first time in almost a year and half. The Huskies will host Millersville University on March 27 at 1:00 pm. The Huskies will celebrate their seniors during the match.
