Redmond Clinches Fourth Point, Men's Tennis Defeats Millersville 4-3

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University men's tennis team got in the wins column with a convincing win over Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opponent, Millersville, 4-3, Saturday afternoon. The Huskies improved to 1-2 on the year and in conference play while the Marauders fell to 1-3 for the season and 1-1 in conference action.

The Huskies worked hard to earn the doubles point. Senior Guille Carranza (Sevilla, Spain/Colegio Calasancio Hispalense) and sophomore Scott Redmond (Paget, Bermuda/Warwick Academy) won the first doubles match for BU as the pair worked a 6-3 win over their Millersville counterparts to tie the doubles matches at 1-1. Freshman Ben Clary (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area) and junior Oliver Wiesemann (Jena, Germany/Deutsche Schule Málaga (Spain)) clinched the point for Bloomsburg with a 7-6 win at No. 2 doubles.

Senior Robin Luetzig (Hadamar, Germany/Furst Johann Ludwig Schule) was the first singles match off the court at No. 4 singles as he defeated his MU opponent, 6-3, 6-2 to give Bloomsburg a 2-0 lead in the match. After senior Nagid Walle (Willemstad, Curacao/Saint Andrew's (Fla.)) fell at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-2, sophomore Victor Martinez (Barcelona, Spain/Padre Damian Sagrados Corazones) gave the Huskies a 3-1 lead in the match with a 6-0, 7-6 win at No. 6 singles.

The Marauders claimed wins at No. 3 singles and No. 2 singles to tie the match at 3-3.

"We always talk about that 3-3 match tie and today we fought hard to come out on top," remarked head coach Rebecca Helt.

Redmond won his first set at No. 5 singles 6-3, but fell in the second set, 7-5. Redmond was able to rebound and work hard to pull out a 6-3 win in the deciding set of both No. 5 singles and the match. With Redmond clinching at win at No. 5, the Huskies earned their fourth and final point.

"Scott scored 4th point by just staying level headed and solid.  We have a bunch of things we need to improve upon but that was a really good team effort and a good win," said Coach Helt.

The Huskies are back in action on April 10 at 12:00 pm against Kutztown. Prior to the match, the Huskies plan to honor their graduating student athletes.
