MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Senior
Anna Dempsey (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) led the charge as the Bloomsburg University lacrosse team exploded for 10 first-half goals in route to defeating Millersville, 16-5, on the road Wednesday afternoon. The Huskies improved to 4-2 on the season and in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East action while the Marauders dropped to 1-5 on the year and in conference play.
Â
This year's signature of the Husky offense has been a very balanced attack and good distribution of the ball, and Wednesday's win was no exception. BU had seven different players score, and 11 players register at least one point. Dempsey led the offense with five goals, four of which came in the first half, while sophomore
Kate Roberts (Lehman, Pa./Lake Lehman) and senior
Abby Bergman (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) each found the back of the net three times. Roberts also added an assist. Sophomore
Haley Williams (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) scored twice for Bloomsburg and handed out an assist, while junior
Kelsey Kilgallon (Spring City, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) and freshman
Cassidy Griffin (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) each had a pair of assists.
Â
Bergman was again a force to be reckoned with at the draw as she collected four draw controls. Dempsey, senior
Allison Bardman (Barto, Pa./Boyertown Area), and freshman
Amanda Stoll (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) each had two DCs as Bloomsburg won 13 of the 10 draw controls for the game.
The Huskies were nearly perfect on clears, going 23-for-24, and turned the ball over just 16 times compared to Millersville's 24 turnovers. Bloomsburg caused 14 turnovers for the game, as Dempsey, Bardman, senior
Tiffany Diachynsky (Barto, Pa./Boyertown Area), senior
Lana Paulo (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township), and freshman
Madison Coyle (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) each had two caused turnovers.
Â
The Huskies wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as Bergman won the opening draw and immediately got her team on offense. The Marauders put good pressure on the Huskies behind the goal but were called for a foul that allowed Bloomsburg to set up its offense. Sophomore
Kelsey Clauss (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) wrapped around the back of the net and found a gap inside the closest post to bury the ball and give the Huskies a 1-0 lead just 19 seconds into action.
Â
Clauss's goal kicked off an 11-0 run for the Huskies that crept into the second half. The run featured four goals from Dempsey, two from Bergman, one from Roberts, sophomore
Annie Rollins (Shamong, N.J./Seneca), and Williams in the first half. Dempsey opened the second half with her fifth goal of the game to give BU an 11-0 lead with 26:17 to play in the contest.
Â
With 17:17 to go in the first half, the Marauders appeared to get their first goal of the game, but the strike was waived off due to a dangerous follow-through, and the Huskies shut out was preserved.
Â
However, Millersville did break up the shut-out with 21:44 to go in the second half as Marycait Dorley scored for the Marauders thanks to an assist from Juliano after a successful Millersville clear.
Â
The Huskies and Marauders went back and forth with the game's following four goals as the Huskies maintained the 10-goal cushion before Millersville cut the lead back to nine with back-to-back strikes from Grace Cobaugh with 8:47 to play. Roberts and junior
Abby Kalish (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) sandwiched a pair of goals around Genevieve Speights' goal to push the Husky lead back to 15-5, and Williams finished out the game just as she did the first half with a goal, this time assisted by Bardman to give the Huskies the 16-5 win.
Â
Graduate student
Angela DiPasquale (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) played all 60 minutes in net for Bloomsburg and made three saves to earn her fourth win of the year. Her Millersville counterpart, Kaleigh Sasdelli, made eight saves in cage for Millersville as she took the loss.
Â
The Huskies continue this short road trip as they travel to East Stroudsburg on Tuesday, April 6, for a 3:00 pm PSAC East contest with the Warriors. East Stroudsburg is currently 5-1 on the year and 4-1 in conference play and takes on Shippensburg on Saturday, April 3.
