Lacrosse Drops a 17-9 Decision to #10 East Stroudsburg Tuesday Afternoon

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University lacrosse team fought hard until the final whistle, but the Huskies fell to #10 East Stroudsburg 17-9, Tuesday afternoon. The Huskies dropped 4-3 for the year and in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East play while the Warriors improved to 7-1 for the year and 6-1 in PSAC East action.

The Warriors got on the board first as Bailey McMaster found the back of the net on a free position shot just 1:54 into action. The lead was short lived, however, as senior Anna Dempsey (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) scored her first of the game two minutes later to even the score at 1-1. East Stroudsburg scored the next two goals within 14 seconds of each other to push its lead to 3-1 with 23:16 to play.

Bloomsburg didn't back down and after an ESU turnover, Dempsey collected her second goal of the game at the 20:25 mark and again at the 18:43 mark to tie the game again at 3-3. After Dempsey's third goal, the Warriors won the ensuing draw control and went right to cage for their fourth goal. ESU pushed its lead to 5-3 with 17:37 to play after winning the draw control and scoring instantly.

The Huskies then pulled to within one, 5-4, after a goal from freshman Cassidy Griffin (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) with 13:58 to play in the first, but that proved to be as close as the Huskies could get to the Warriors as ESU went on a 5-0 goal run over the next seven minutes to push their lead to 10-4 with 4:38 to play in the first half. Bloomsburg got one back as senior Abby Bergman (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) scored her 15th of the year with 3:11 to play off an assist from sophomore Haley Williams (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley). Bergman's goal was the last of the half and the two teams went into the break with ESU leading 10-5.

Coming out of the break, the Warriors rattled off four-straight goals to extend their lead to 14-5 and start to put the game just out of the reach of the Huskies. Bloomsburg halted the run with two quick goals, one from Dempsey and the other from Bergman as they cut the lead down to 14-7. ESU and Bloomsburg traded the next two goals as Griffin found the back of the net for the second time it the game with 13:50 left to play.

Freshman Amanda Stoll (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) won the draw after Griffin's goal but the ball changed possession three times before ESU was able to complete a successful clear and go to cage. A Bloomsburg foul set up the ESU free position shot and Emily Mitarotonda scored on the free position shot to make it 16-8 in favor of East Stroudsburg with 10:11 to play.

The Warriors found the back of the net for the final time in the contest with just 57 seconds left on the clock as Elaina Ohlson scored a man-up goal to extend the lead to 17-8. Dempsey won the ensuing draw control and Stoll weaved through defenders for her first of the game and eighth goal of the season for the last score of the afternoon. The Warriors out-lasted the Huskies to win, 17-9.

Dempsey finished the day with a team-best four goals while Bergman and Griffin each scored a pair. Dempsey also won a team-best five draw controls while senior Tiffany Diachynsky (Barto, Pa./Boyertown Area) caused a team-best six turnovers. Senior Erika Biehl (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) led the team with five ground balls.

Graduate student Angela DiPasquale (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) made a season-high 12 saves in net for Bloomsburg while taking the loss. Her ESU counterpart, Tatyana Petteway made 14 saves to earn the win.

The Huskies held a 24-17 advantage in ground balls and a 16-12 advantage in draw controls while the Warriors out-shot BU 36-27.
