Women's Tennis Shuts Out Shepherd, 5-0, Friday Afternoon

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va. - The Bloomsburg University women's tennis team got back in the win column on Friday as the Huskies shut out Shepherd University, 5-0, on the road. With the win, the Huskies improved to 3-2 on the year and in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action while the Rams fell to 0-2 on the year and in conference play.

Seniors Isabella Sarquis (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Metodo) and Haille Hoeflein (Easton, Pa./Easton) opened the match with a 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles and Bloomsburg secured the doubles point as sisters Taylor Capoferri (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) and Sarah Capoferri (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) won 6-2 at No. 1 doubles. The Rams were playing shorthanded and the two teams only played two doubles matches.

"There were super windy conditions today, forcing players to change up their strategy and figure out what was going to work," remarked head coach Rebecca Helt following the match. "It was great to see the depth on both teams get the chance to step up and compete."

The Huskies completed the shut out as they won singles matches in order. Taylor Capoferri (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) kicked off singles play at No. 1 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 win and Sarah Capoferri (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) followed with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles. Freshman Anna Chikhalenko (Birmingham, Mich./Wylie F. Groves) picked up a hard-fought win at No. 3 singles. After dropping the first set 6-2, she rebounded for a 6-2 win in the second set and secured the tie break win, 1-0, and earn the match point. Junior Alyssa Kapcsos (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) finished off the match with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles.

The Huskies return home on Monday, April 19 to take a short break from PSAC action when they host Jefferson University for a 2:00 pm match at Burt Reese Tennis Center.
