Standen’s Gem Leads Baseball to Split with Mansfield, Saturday Afternoon

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Because of unplayable field conditions at Mansfield, all four games of the series against Mansfield University were moved to Bloomsburg. Playing as the home team in both games, the Mountaineers took the first game 5-3, but the Husky bats came alive in the night cap as BU took the second game, 6-0. The Huskies improved to 10-8 for the year and in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East action while the Mounties dropped to 7-15 for the season and 6-12 in PSAC East play.

Freshman Michael Standen (Drexel Hill, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) took the hill for the Huskies in the second game and was outstanding. After a 1-out error allowed Assaf Lowengart to reach in the first inning, Standen did not allow got a ground ball off the bat of Tyler Melko to get Lowengart out at second on a fielder's choice and froze Ben Osborne looking at the third strike to end the inning.

The Huskies gave Standen a 1-0 cushion in the top of the first. With two outs, redshirt junior Kyle OFier (Pittston Township, Pa./Pittston Area) walked before classmate Jared Burcin (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) reached on a field error by the Mansfield short stop that allowed OFier to go to third. With freshman Wyatt Metzger (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) up at bat, the pair of the base paths completed the double steal as OFier came home for the 1-0 lead.

Standen worked quickly through the Mansfield line up in the second and redshirt junior Carter Chasanov (Magnolia, Del./Polytech) pushed the Huskies lead to 2-0 with a solo home run to lead off the top of the third.

The Mounties had two base runners for the first time in the game as Alan Bautista and Lowengart each worked a walk, but Tyler Melko popped up to OFier at second and got Standen out of the inning.

Graduate student Cole Swiger (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) matched Chasanov's lead off heroics as he led off the top of the fourth with a long home run down the left field line into the trees.

Standen carried a no-hitter into the bottom of the fourth before it was broken up by a double from Zach Shertzer. Joe Tummino reached on an infield single to right behind the mound to put two runners on. Standen got Zach Spray to fly out to right but not deep enough to score Shertzer and Bautisa struck out looking to end the fourth.

After a quiet fifth for both teams, Bloomsburg broke it open with three runs in the top of the sixth. Redshirt senior Gianni Sinatore (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) reached on a single to left center and moved to second on a balk. After redshirt junior Jared Schram (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) walked to put two runners on. After a pitching change for Mansfield, redshirt junior Jake Reed (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) walked to load the bases. A wild pitch from Luke Payne brought home Sinatore and redshirt sophomore Anthony Viggiano (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) singled to left center to clear the bases and give Bloomsburg a 6-0 lead.

Melko led off the sixth with a bunt single down the third base line and took second on a Bloomsburg throwing error. Osborne singled up the middle to put runners on the corners with no one out for Mansfield, but a fielder's choice erased Osborne from the basepaths. Standen got Tummino out swinging for the second out and Spray grounded out to Viggiano at third to end the inning for Mansfield.

The Huskies went quietly in the top of the seventh and redshirt freshman Brandon McGaw (Danville, Pa./Danville) came out in relief of Standen to pitch the seventh and followed in the starter's footsteps. McGaw got Josh Farina to line out to right before Dylan Mercedes struck out swinging. Jake Haas ended the game with a fly ball to left.

Standen went 6.0 innings, allowing just four hits and two walks while striking out seven for his first collegiate win on the mound for Bloomsburg.

In the opening game, Mansfield took its first lead in the bottom of the fourth with a sacrifice fly and a two-run home run.

Bloomsburg did tie the contest in the top of the sixth. Chasanov singled up the middle to lead off the frame and OFier doubled him home to get the Huskies on the board. Burcin followed with a single to center to put runners on the corners and after a pair of strike outs, Swiger laced a single to right center to bring home freshman Brady Gibble (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson), who pinch ran for Burcin, and OFier.

The Mounties put their first two runners on in the bottom of the sixth and a throwing error by the Bloomsburg first baseman on a bunt attempt by Tummino allowed both Shertzer and Lowengart to score to give the back to MU, 5-3.

The Huskies went down in order as Mansfield hung on for the 5-3 win.

Redshirt freshman Logan Hile (Winfield, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) took the loss for Bloomsburg as he allowed the two unearned runs in the sixth.  Hunter DePrimo earned the win on the mound for the Mounties.

For the day, Swiger, Viggiano, and Chasanv all finished with three hits between the two games.

The Huskies have little time for rest as they complete the season series tomorrow, April 18, against the Mounties at Danny Litwhiler Field. Bloomsburg will return to its normal position as the home team on the scoreboard for Sunday's games beginning at 12:00 pm. Live stat and broadcast links are available at buhuskies.com.
