BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - Senior
Abby Wild (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) went 5-for-6 with three runs scored and four RBI in the doubleheader and then added a complete-game victory in the nightcap on Saturday afternoon as she lifted the Bloomsburg University softball team to a sweep over visiting Mansfield University at Jan M. Hutchinson Field. The Huskies took game one by a 14-5 final in four-and-a-half innings and then completed the sweep with a 5-3 victory in game two. Bloomsburg improved to 9-15 overall and 7-15 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division standings while Mansfield dropped to 2-16 overall with an identical mark in divisional play.
Wild went 3-for-3 with her first collegiate home run in game one and then went 2-for-3 in game two as she upped her season batting average from .308 to .362 in the two-game sweep. In the circle, she tossed a complete-game victory in game two as she allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits while walking two and striking out five. She improved to 5-6 on the season with the win.
Bloomsburg scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning of game one against Mansfield starter, Alexis Easling, as the offense provided run support for senior righthander
Tara Baney (Howard, Pa./Bellefonte Area). Freshman
Kayleigh Lenner (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) started the inning with her first collegiate triple and then scored on an RBI double from junior
Danielle Barnes (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) as Bloomsburg jumped in front early. Two batters later, freshman
Alex Iseminger (Everett, Pa./Everett Area) singled to drive home Barnes to push the advantage to 2-0. Senior
Nicolette Ray (Abington, Pa./Abington) followed with a single and then junior
Erin DelPierre (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) reached on a fielder's choice with a Mountaineers' error on the play allowing Iseminger to score the third run of the inning. Wild then belted her first collegiate home run to straightaway center field to bring home Ray to to push the margin to 5-0 after an inning.
The visitors, however, answered with four runs in the top of the second to trim the Huskies' lead to 5-4. Mansfield loaded the bases with one out before Baney was able to induce a fielder's choice to erase the lead runner at the plate for the second out of the inning. However, an error off the bat of Lacey O'Donnell allowed the first run to score and then Hannah Breitigan laced a bases-clearing double for the final three runs of the inning.
The Huskies responded with a pair in the bottom of the second inning against reliever, Maddy Jean, to extend the lead to 7-4. Junior
Alexis Wetzler (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte Area) led off with a single and then advanced to second on a bunt single from Lenner. Two batters later, junior
Sammi Starr (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area) brought home Wetzler with a run-scoring single and then Iseminger plated Lenner on a run-scoring groundout for the second run of the frame.
Another run crossed the plate in the bottom of the third as the Huskies grew the lead to 8-4. Lenner provided the support with a run-scoring groundout to bring home DelPierre who led off the inning with a walk.
Bloomsburg then broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth as it scored six runs on eight hits to take a 14-4 advantage after four innings. Senior
Balee Leeser (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) started the rally with her first collegiate hit - a one-out single to right center field. Ray followed with a single to put runners at first and second with one away. After Jean retired DelPierre for the second out of the inning, the Huskies' offense exploded with two-out lightning. Wild singled to drive home Leeser for a 9-4 lead and then Baney singled to drive home Ray for the Huskies' tenth run of the game. Wetzler continued the streak with an RBI single to plate Wild and Lenner followed with a run-scoring single to plate Baney. Barnes followed with a run-scoring single and then a single by Starr, compounded by a Mansfield error, brought home the sixth run of the inning.
Mansfield plated an unearned run in the top of the fifth against Baney but could not avoid the run-rule as the Huskies' took game one.
Baney improved to 4-8 on the season as she allowed five runs - all unearned - on six hits. She did not walk a batter and struck out seven. Easling suffered the loss for Mansfield as she dropped to 0-9 on the year.
The Huskies had a season-high 17 hits in the opener. Lenner went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a pair of RBI while Wild went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI which included her first career home run. Barnes, Starr, Ray, and Wetzler each added two hits in game one.
Game two turned into a pitcher's duel between Wild and Mansfield starter, Danielle Goff.
Bloomsburg jumped in front 1-0 with a single tally in the bottom of the first inning. Lenner again set the table as she led off with a single, stole second, took third on a passed ball, and then scored on a bunt single from Starr. The Mountaineers eventually tied the game in the top of the third on a run-scoring single from Joelle Snyder.
The game remained tied at 1-1 until the Huskies scored four unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-1 advantage. Lenner got the offense going with a leadoff triple but, after an out and an error, was thrown out at the plate as Ray tried to bring her home with a bunt. Goff was then one pitch away from getting out of the inning, but DelPierre laced an 0-2 pitch over the head of the Mansfield left fielder for a two-run triple to give Bloomsburg a 3-1 lead. Wild followed with an RBI triple to right to bring home DelPierre for the third run of the inning and Baney capped off the scoring with a run-scoring double off the center-field fence to plate Wild for a 5-1 advantage.
Mansfield scored an unearned run in the top of the sixth and added a run in the top of the seventh before Wild retired Breitigan on a fly ball to right field to end the game.
Goff dropped to 2-7 on the year after allowing five runs (one earned) on 11 hits. She did not issue a walk and struck out two.
Lenner, Ray, Wild, and Baney each had two of Bloomsburg's 11 hits in the nightcap. Starr, DelPierre, and Wetzler had the other hits with DelPierre's two-run triple in the bottom of the fifth snapping the 1-1 tie.
The two teams will conclude the four-game weekend series on Sunday afternoon, April 18, in Mansfield. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
