Baseball Splits a Pair of 8-7 Games with ESU on the Road

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University baseball team hung on for an 8-7 win in the second game of a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East doubleheader against East Stroudsburg, Monday afternoon. The Warriors won the first game 8-7, but the Huskies picked up a season-series win over ESU with the nightcap win. The Huskies improved to 9-7 on the year and in conference play while the Warriors dropped to 11-10 on the year and 9-7 in conference action.

The Huskies out-hit East Stroudsburg 11-8 in the second game and took advantage of a pair of significant Warrior errors to secure the season-series win. Redshirt senior Gianni Sinatore (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) led the offense for Bloomsburg as he was just a triple away from hitting for the cycle with a big three-run home run, an RBI double, and a two-run single in the game. Redshirt juniors Carter Chasanov (Magnolia, Del./Polytech) and Kyle OFier (Pittston Township, Pa./Pittston Area) each finished with a pair of hits as well.

The Warriors struck first with a run on one hit in the bottom of the second after both teams went down in order in the first. The 1-0 lead for ESU held until the top of the fourth as Bloomsburg plated three runs on two hits and a hit batsman. Redshirt sophomore Anthony Viggiano (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) led off the inning, getting hit on a 1-2 pitch, and redshirt sophomore Tyler Wiik (Fogelsville, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) moved him into scoring position with an infield single to third base. After a flyout for the first out of the inning. Sinatore ripped a double to bring home Viggiano and move Wiik to third and tie it at 1-1. Senior Cole Swiger (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) kept the runners moving as he reached on a fielder's choice, and Wiik came home. With Sinatore on third, redshirt junior Jake Reed (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) hit a sacrifice fly to left for the 2-1 BU lead.

Redshirt senior JJ Spehrley (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area) allowed a 1-out walk in the bottom of the fourth but froze Tommy Dunleavy on a 1-2 pitch for the second out and got Tim Haverstick to go down swinging to end the inning and any scoring threat.

The Huskies tacked on two more insurance runs in the top of the fifth as Chasanov led off the inning with a single and was able to take second on a throwing error by the shortstop. OFier followed with a single of his own, and Chasanov was able to come home. With OFier on second after a ground out, Wiik reached on another error by the Warriors. The error also allowed OFier to go home and give BU a 5-1 lead after four and a half innings.

However, the Warriors got one back in the bottom of the fifth, as Logan Stirr led off the inning with a solo home run to left. With one out and one on, redshirt freshman Nate Baranski (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) came out in relief of Spehrley and gave up a single to put two runners on. Baranski got a ground ball to get his second out and finished off the inning, catching B Kauffman watching the third strike to get out of the jam.

Bloomsburg answer in the top of the sixth as Sinatore led off with a home run of his own for the 6-2 Bloomsburg lead. The Warriors made it a two-run ballgame with a pair of runs on four hits in the bottom of the sixth, but the Huskies once again answered with two runs of their own on three hits in the top of the seventh. With two outs and the bases loaded, Sinatore singled on a 1-2 pitch to bring home Wiik and OFier.

However, the Warriors would not go quietly as they put the first two runners on the bottom of the seventh, thanks to a hit batter and a walk. Redshirt sophomore Jared Marshman (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) came out in relief to try and close out the game. With one out, Dunleavy sent the first pitch he saw over the left-field fence to make it 8-7 in favor of Bloomsburg. Marshman then was able to get Haverstick to pop up and Stirr to ground out to end the game and earn his first save of the season.

Spehrley earned his first win of the season after going 4.1 innings and allowing two runs, both earned, on two hits and four strikeouts. Spehrley walked three. Brent Francisco dropped to 2-2 on the year as he went 4.0 innings and allowed three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out three.

In-game one, Bloomsburg jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first as redshirt junior Jared Burcin (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) grounded out back to the pitcher with the bases loaded and graduate student Andrew Holmes (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Egg Harbor Township) was able to come home. Viggiano added to the lead with a sacrifice fly to right field, and the Huskies would have to settle for the 2-0 lead after the top of the first.

The Warriors got on back on one hit in the bottom of the first, but a single from OFier in the top of the second pushed the Huskies' lead back to two runs, 3-1.

East Stroudsburg broke open the game in the bottom of the third as the Warriors sent 12 batters to the plate and scored seven of them on seven hits and a pair of walks. Haverstick homered with two to give ESU its first lead of the game, 4-3, and C Freeman had an RBI single to give the Warriors an 8-3 lead.

Bloomsburg did plate a run in the top of the fourth with a bases-loaded double-play ball that brought home Reed to cut the lead to 8-4. The Huskies made it close in the top of the fifth as they scored three runs on three hits to make it a one-run game. Viggiano doubled to lead off the frame, and redshirt junior Ben Newbert (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Harriton) singled to put runners on the corners. Sinatore hit his first home run of the day, a three-run shot to left field to cut the lead down to one, 8-7. Nathan Kitchell was able to get himself out of the inning, however, with the lead intact.

The Huskies put the first runner on in the top of the seventh as Newbert singled to second base, but they could not capitalize as CJ Gonzales got a ground ball double play and a final ground out to seal the win.

Redshirt freshman Logan Hile (Winfield, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) suffered the loss for Bloomsburg as he gave up seven runs on seven hits and two walks, though he struck out two in just 1.0 inning of work. Cam Voss earned the win for ESU after going 4.0 innings and allowing four runs on three hits and nine walks. Voss struck out two.

The Huskies have the next nine days off before hosting PSAC East opponent Mansfield University on Friday, April 16, in a twin bill scheduled to begin at 12:00 pm at Danny Litwhiler Field.
