SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University women's tennis team got back to action after a about a week and a half off and defeated Shippensburg, 6-1, in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action, Thursday afternoon. The Huskies improved to 1-1 on the year and in conference play while the Raiders dropped to 0-3 on the year and against PSAC teams.
After securing the doubles point with wins in the top two matches, the Huskies cruised in singles to secure the victory.
"Doubles started off very tight," remarked head coach
Rebecca Helt. "But Taylor and Gi fought hard to come back and win the doubles point. Singles was much better – they just played smart and steady."
Sophomore
Sarah Capoferri (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) and senior
Isabella Sarquis (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Metodo) were the first pair off the court at No. 2 doubles as they defeated their Shippensburg opponents, 6-2. Senior
Devon DiCampli (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) and freshman
Anna Chikhalenko (Birmingham, Mich./Wylie F. Groves) dropped a close 6-4 match at No. 3 leaving the doubles point up for grabs still. Graduate student
Taylor Capoferri (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) and senior
Giovanna Bonito (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Reino) sealed the opening point of the match for BU with a 7-5 win at No. 1.
Taylor Capoferri (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) was quickly off the court at No. 1 singles to give Bloomsburg a 2-0 lead in the match as she worked a quick 6-1, 6-1 win. The Raiders scored their only point of the contest as Jenna Sluymer won 6-2, 6-3 over Bonito at No. 2 singles.
Sarah Capoferri (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) pushed the Huskies' lead to 3-1 with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles and Sarquis clinched the match win with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 3 singles and claimed the fourth match point.
Chikhalenko picked up her first singles win of the year as she defeated Merel Hoekstra 6-4, 6-1 at No. 5 singles and senior
Haille Hoeflein (Easton, Pa./Easton) wrapped up the match with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles to seal the 6-1 victory for Bloomsburg.
The Huskies have a short break as they get right back on the court on Saturday as they host Kutztown at Burt Reese Tennis Center in a PSAC showdown at 12:00 pm. Prior to the match, Bloomsburg will honor its graduating student-athletes.
