BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University softball team came from behind in both games of a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East doubleheader against Lock Haven on Saturday, but had to settle for a split. The Huskies took the first game 5-2 but fell in the nightcap, 4-3, in eight innings. The Huskies dropped to 15-17 on the year and 13-17 in the PSAC East while the Bald Eagles moved to 10-20 on the year and in conference play.
Â
The Huskies trailed 2-0 after the first three innings but kept fighting back until they finally broke up the shutout in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, junior
Rebecca Rossi (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton Area) dropped a single just behind the third baseman and junior
Danielle Barnes (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) reached on a throwing error by the LHU short stop. Rossi moved to third on the error. Junior
Alexis Wetzler (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte Area) plated the first two runs for the Huskies as she singled to the pitcher that allowed Rossi to come home but a throwing error by the second baseman allowed Barnes to cross the plate as well. Senior
Briannah Dobson (York, Pa./Central York) singled up the middle and moved up a base on a wild pitch that allowed Barnes to come home to give BU a 3-2 lead.
Â
Bloomsburg added a pair of runs in the top of fifth. Rossi singled to left with junior
Erin DelPierre (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) and freshman
Alex Iseminger (Everett, Pa./Everett Area) on base, but the ball got away from the left fielder and both DelPierre and Iseminger came around to score. Rossi tried for home but was nabbed in an extremely close play to end the inning. The Huskies extended their lead to 5-2.
Â
Senior
Abby Wild (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) pitched a shut-down sixth to keep the Bald Eagles at bay. The Huskies were turned away in the sixth as well as the score held 5-2 going into the final inning. LHU put its first two runners on in the top of the seventh but Wild got a fly out to left for the first out and then a pair of ground outs to end the game.
Â
Rossi and Dobson each went 2-for-3 at the plate. Wild picked up her ninth win of the year after going the full 7.0 innings, allowing two runs on six hits and three walks while striking out six.
Â
The Bald Eagles jumped out to an early lead in game two as well as Riley McCellen struck out to open the game but was able to reach on a passed ball. She came around to score on Haley Lestician's double down the left field line. Lock Haven added another run in the top of the third to take a 2-0 lead.
Â
Bloomsburg got one back in the bottom of the fourth as Wetzler flew out to left with DelPierre on third to cut the lead to 2-1.
Â
After a scoreless fifth for both teams, Casey Carpenter hit a two-out solo home run to left center to push the Bald Eagles' lead back 3-1. Bloomsburg tied the game in the bottom of the sixth as Wetzler singled to left and brough home Barnes and senior
Nicolette Ray (Abington, Pa./Abington) to tie the game at 3-3.
Â
The Huskies had the winning run on third in the bottom of the seventh but couldn't bring her home and the game went into extra innings.
Â
The Bald Eagles opened the eighth with a ground rule double to left by Lestician. Lestician moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and came around to score on Carpetner's single up the middle. LHU took the 4-3. Senior
Tara Baney (Howard, Pa./Bellefonte Area) got out of the inning without any more damage with a strike out and a fly ball to right.
Â
Barnes got on after getting hit by a pitch but was replaced by Wetzler on a fielder's choice and represented the game-tying run. The Huskies were unable to bring her home after top infield pop ups ended the game. The Bald Eagles hung on for the 4-3 win.
Â
Baney took the loss in the circle for the Huskies as she went 8.0 innings and allowed four runs, just two earned, on eight hits. She struck out five and did not allow a walk. Wetzler went 1-3 at the plate with three RBIs for Bloomsburg.
Â
The Huskies wrap up the regular season tomorrow as they travel to Lock Haven for a PSAC East doubleheader. The first pitch is set for 1:00 pm.
