LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University baseball team wrapped up its season-series with Lock Haven University with a split of the Sunday doubleheader. Lock Haven took the first game 14-10 before the Huskies hung on to close out the weekend with a 5-4 win in game two. The Huskies improved to 16-12 on the year and in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East action while the Bald Eagles dropped to 6-18 on the year and conference play.
Â
In the second game, Bloomsburg jumped out to an early lead as redshirt junior
Ben Newbert (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Harriton) led off the top of the second with a homer to left field to give BU a 1-0 lead. After graduate student
Cole Swiger (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) walked and stole second, redshirt junior
Jake Reed (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) singled to center to bring home Swiger and give the Huskies a 2-0 lead.
Â
Starting pitcher redshirt senior
JJ Spehrley (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area) found himself in a bit of trouble in the bottom of the second with runners on second and third and one out, but got a ground out to third and redshirt sophomore
Anthony Viggiano (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) held the runner at third and got the batter at first and finished the inning with a fly ball to right field.
Â
Redshirt junior
Kyle OFier (Pittston Township, Pa./Pittston Area) kept the home run parade going as he led off the third with a solo shot to right center to give BU a 3-0 lead. Despite loading the bases, the Huskies settled for the one run in the inning.
Â
Lock Haven got on the board in the bottom of the third as Reagan Lawlor doubled to lead off the inning and Justin Lichtenwalner tripled to right center to bring him home and cut the Huskies' lead to 3-1.
Â
Both teams went scoreless in the fourth and the Huskies did not score in the fifth. The Bald Eagles cut the lead to one run as they scored one run on one hit but left the bases loaded.
Â
Bloomsburg added a pair of insurance runs in the six, but proved to be important, as the Huskies scored a pair of runs on two hits in the inning. Reed led off the frame with a double down the left field line and Viggiano brought him home with a double to left center. A pair of wild pitches eventually brought home Viggiano to give Bloomsburg a 5-2 advantage.
Â
The Bald Eagles answered with a pair of runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth to make it a one-run ball game once again. LHU scored two on two hits and left runners on the corners.
Â
Bloomsburg had two runners on with one out in the top of the seventh but a double play stifled any attempt to add a cushion for the Huskies. The Bald Eagles got a two-out walk in the bottom of the seventh but couldn't bring him home and Huskies held on for the 5-4 win.
Â
Spehrley improved to 2-1 on the mound for the Huskies as he went 4.2 and allowed two runs on five hits and five walks while striking out six. Redshirt freshman
Brandon McGaw (Danville, Pa./Danville) got his first collegiate save as he went 1.2 scoreless innings, allowing just one walk and striking out two.
Â
At the plate, Newbert, Swiger, and Reed all finished with a pair of hits while OFier and Newbert each hit a home run.
Â
In the first game, the Huskies and Bald Eagles battled back and forth in a slugger's battle. The Huskies jumped out to the quick lead as OFier hit his first home run of the day with redshirt junior
Carter Chasanov (Magnolia, Del./Polytech) walked, stole second, and advanced to third on an error by the catcher.
Â
The Bald Eagles had a pair of hits in the bottom of the first but nothing to show for it as the Huskies turned a double play and graduate student
Ed Herbener (Drums, Pa./MMI Preparatory School) got Issac Porter down looking.
Â
Bloomsburg added three runs on three hits in the top of the second to take a 5-0 lead over Lock Haven. With the bases loaded and one out, Viggiano flied out to center and brought home Newbert. Chasanov followed with double to left center to bring home Swiger and OFier singled to center to score Reed but the inning ended with Chasanov attempting to come home as well.
Â
The Bald Eagles were held scoreless for the first two innings but broke out the bats in the bottom of the third. LHU scored four times on three hits, including a three-run home run to cut the lead to one, 5-4.
Â
The Huskies got one back in the top of the fourth as graduate student
Andrew Holmes (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Egg Harbor Township) walked with the bases loaded and Viggiano came home. The Bald Eagles broke open the game in the bottom of the fourth with seven runs on six hits and a Husky error to take an 11-6 lead midway through the contest.
Â
Bloomsburg got one back on Viggiano's RBI single that brought home Swiger as the Huskies cut the lead to 11-7. LHU responded in the bottom of the fifth with two runs on three hits to push its lead to 13-7.
Â
The Huskies did not score in the sixth and Lock Haven added one more run in the bottom of the sixth to extend its lead to 14-7 going into the final inning.
Â
Bloomsburg attempted a comeback as the Huskies scored three runs on three hits in the top of the seventh but could not overcome the seven-run deficit. Viggiano singled to center to put runners on the corners with Swiger on third and Chasanov doubled to left to bring home Swiger. With two outs, redshirt junior
Jared Burcin (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) singled to left and brought home both Chasanov and Viggiano, but that proved to be the last Husky run as the Bald Eagles hung on to win 14-10.
Â
Redshirt freshman
Logan Hile (Winfield, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) took the loss for BU after going just 0.1 of an innings and allowing three runs on one hit and two walks.
Â
Burcin finished with three hits and two RBIs while Viggiano, Chasanov, OFier, and Newbert all had a pair of hits. Viggiano and Chasanov each had two RBIs and OFier finished with three. Swiger scored three times while Viggiano and Chasanov each scored twice.
Over the weekend, the Huskies slugged 10 home runs between the four games, including seven on Saturday.
