Women's Soccer Drops Tough 1-0 Decision to Shippensburg

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University women's soccer team dropped a tough 1-0 decision to visiting Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action on a soggy Wednesday night. The Huskies dropped to 2-2-1 for the year and 1-1-1 in conference play while the Raiders improved to 2-2-1 for the season and 2-0-1 in PSAC action.

The two teams had to wait nearly three hours and 20 minutes to get the contest underway after a thunderstorm rolled through Columbia County. As the teams finally got on the pitch, it seemed as though Bloomsburg had full control of the game. The Huskies out-shot the Raiders 11-2 in the first half, including three shots in the first 10 minutes of action.

Shippensburg didn't get its first shot of the game off until there was 16:13 left in the half. Sophomore keeper Alexa Ryan (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) turned away the Raiders' attempt to keep the game scoreless.

Julie Kylie Schwab (Lewisberry, Pa./Red Land) put the final shot of the first half on target but Kendra Barlow collected the save for Shippensburg and the two teams headed into the break tied 0-0.

The second half continued in play as the first did with Bloomsburg putting pressure on the Raiders' defense struggling to find the back of the net. Just over 10 minutes into the half, junior Campbell Power (Souderton, Pa./Souderton Area) had her sights on an open corner just inside the far post but the ball ricocheted off the post and into play, keeping the Huskies off of the board.

The scoreless tie was finally broken with 9:21 to play as Shippensburg's Maddie Sticher collected the ball just in front of the net out of traffic and placed it just over Ryan's reach to give the Raiders the 1-0 lead.

Bloomsburg had the final shot of the game in the 83rd minute but Schwab's final shot went wide and the Raiders escaped with the 1-0 win.

The Huskies out-shot the Raiders 21-3 for the game, but held a slight 4-2 advantage in shots on goal. Bloomsburg led in corner kicks 9-3 as well.

Harris, senior Natalie Holmes (Laurel, Md./Archbishop Spalding), Power, senior Helen Flynn (Allentown, Pa./Parkland), and freshman Brooke Foster (Cherry Hill, N.J./Camden Catholic) all finished with three shots for Bloomsburg. Ryan finished the day with one save.

The Huskies return to action on Saturday when they head to Shepherdstown, W. Va. to face Shepherd in a PSAC East contest at 1:00 pm.
