MANSFIELD, Pa. – Bloomsburg University field hockey and Mansfield University needed every last second and then some to determine a winner, Thursday. Down to their second to last shoot out chance, sophomore
Alicia Carr (Shickshinny, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) finally broke the tie with the only goal of the shootout and junior
Abby Shaffer (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) shut the door on the Mounties to give Bloomsburg a 3-2 win. With the victory, the Huskies improved to 3-2 on the year while the Mounties dropped to 3-2.
After the first three shoot out attempts on both sides were saved with some pretty incredible acrobatics from both goalies, Carr worked around the goalie and lift the ball into the cage from about five yards out for the first shoot out goal. Shaffer shut down the next scoring attempt by the Mounties to maintain the 1-0 lead for BU. After the Huskies final chance to score was stopped by August Lewis, Shaffer laid on out on Mounties final attempt and swept it away to seal to the 3-2 victory for the Huskies.
Â
Both teams had plenty of chances in the first quarter but it was Carr that got the scoring started at the 11:23 mark with the first goal of the game after she dribbled through the box and fired past the right of the keeper for her first collegiate goal.
Â
Three minutes into the second quarter, junior
Meghan Longenhagen (Catawissa, Pa./Southern Columbia) pushed the Husky lead to 2-0 thanks to a helper from freshman
Kara Koch (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg Area). Koch led Longenhagen into the center of the box and she beat the keeper to her right.
Â
The Mounties had back-to-back scoring chances within the first three minutes of the third quarter but Shaffer made a pair of saves to keep Mansfield off of the board. The Mounties did finally break through at the 37:14 mark as Kelsey Robertson got an assist from Lauren Grello to cut the lead to 2-1.
Â
Just over a minute and a half into the fourth quarter, the Mounties were awarded a penalty stroke, but Shaffer was up to the task and knocked away the potential equalizer. Mansfield tied the game with less than two minutes to go in regulation after a defensive save by senior
Madilyn McKay (Dover, Del./Polytech).
Â
Mansfield had three shows in the final 10 seconds of action but Shaffer kept the game tied with a pair of saves and senior
Ashley Maxwell (Mount Joy, Pa./Donegal) made a defensive save.
Â
Bloomsburg took 10 shots in the overtime periods to the two from Mansfield while the Huskies were awarded six penalty corners but neither team could find the golden goal and the game went into a shootout.
Â
For the game, the two teams were tied 20-20 in shots while Shaffer made a career-best 15 saves and stopped all five shots in the shootout.
Â
The Huskies get back to action on Sunday as they host Lindenwood at Steph Pettit Stadium for a 11:00 am contest.
