Women's Soccer Wins 2OT Thriller, 1-0, Over East Stroudsburg

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University women's soccer team and East Stroudsburg have played a combined 213:11 minutes against each other this season and have finally found separation as the Huskies celebrated a 1-0 double-overtime win over the Warriors, Wednesday night. With the win, the Huskies improved to 4-2-1 on the season and 3-1-1 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East play while the Warriors dropped to 2-3-1 on the season and 1-3-1 in PSAC East action.

The Huskies and Warriors played a very tight, nearly identical first half as neither team could find the back of the net despite each putting two shots on goal. The Huskies led 4-3 in shots after the first 45.

Bloomsburg found its offensive footing in the second half as the Huskies got 10 shots off, but only two were on target and both were stopped by the Warriors goalie, Mauri Jackson. The Bloomsburg defense limited the Warriors to just two shots, neither on goal, to preserve the shut out.

Bloomsburg got three shots off in the final 1:09 of play in regulation including senior Helen Flynn's (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) shot that was stopped by Jackson and a hard strike from junior Abby Groff (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) that was blocked. Junior Campbell Power (Souderton, Pa./Souderton Area) took the final shot of regulation but it went just wide and the Huskies and Warriors headed into overtime for the second time this season.

The Warriors took the only shot of the first extra period as Brienn Seaman got a head on the ball after a corner kick but it went wide and the two teams went into double over time once again.

Unlike the 1-1 double overtime tie from earlier in the season, the Huskies got the golden goal today. After a hard foul just outside the 18-yard box which set Bloomsburg up essentially on the line, Power tipped the ball to senior Natalie Holmes (Laurel, Md./Archbishop Spalding) who one-timed it to Flynn. Flynn buried a strike inside the near post and under the goalie for the thrilling 1-0 Huskies win.

For the game, the Huskies led 16-6 in shots, including the 10 in the second half. Bloomsburg held the slight 2-1 advantage in corner kicks as well.

Sophomore Alexa Ryan (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) needed just two saves for her third shutout of the season, and both saves came in the first half. Jackson made four saves in the loss for the Warriors.

Holmes and Flynn paced the Huskies with three shots each on the day.

Bloomsburg gets back to action on Saturday as the Huskies travel to Lock Haven University for an 11:30 am PSAC East contest.
