10th-Ranked Field Hockey Extends Winning Streak to Six with 1-0 Overtime Win Over New Haven

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The #10 Bloomsburg University field hockey team played extra hockey for the third time this season as the Huskies and New Haven University Chargers needed one extra period to decide the winner. Bloomsburg is now 2-1 in overtime games as the Huskies defeated the Chargers, 1-0, Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Huskies improve to 6-2 on the year while the Chargers drop to 4-4.

The win also pushes the Huskies winning streak to six games. After dropping two close games to open the year, Bloomsburg has now won six-straight and have out-scored opponents 17-5 during the stretch.

Senior Kristen Robinson (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area) was the difference maker for the Huskies this time as she scored with 49 seconds to play in the first overtime period. She had an initial shot at the 67:57 mark before sophomore Emily Swineford (Mt. Pleasant Mills, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) controlled the ball and passed it across the box. Sophomore Madeline Newman (Lehman, Pa./Lake-Lehman) deflect the pass to Robinson who shot it home for the 1-0 Bloomsburg victory.

The Huskies and Chargers were both held scoreless through regulation, though the Huskies led in shots throughout the contest. Bloomsburg led 6-0 in shots at half time and led 2-0 in shots on goal. The Chargers didn't get their first shot off until the start of the third quarter. They put their first shot on cage midway through the fourth quarter, though junior Abby Shaffer (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) made the save.

Shaffer made a save with 2:16 left in regulation and made her fourth of the game four minutes into overtime to preserve the win and shutout.

As a team, the Huskies led the Chargers 22-8 in shots and 13-5 in corners.

The Huskies return to action next Wednesday when they travel to Kutztown University for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) contest against the Golden Bears at 7:00 pm.
