KUTZTOWN, Pa. - The ninth-ranked Bloomsburg University field hockey team dropped a tough 1-0 decision to #7 Kutztown University in double overtime, Wednesday night. The Huskies fell to 6-3 for the year and 1-1 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action while the Golden Bears improved to 6-1 for the year and 2-0 in conference play.
The Huskies came out on fire in the first quarter as they got a pair of shots off in the first 15 minutes of action. Senior
Carlee Williams (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) took the first shot for the Huskies 6:24 into action but her shot was blocked by the Golden Bears defense. After a penalty corner for Bloomsburg with just over a minute to play, freshman
Aydan McFarland (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg Area) got a shot off but hers was blocked as well and the score remained 0-0 after the first quarter.
The Golden Bears had four penalty corners in the second but couldn't make anything out of them as junior
Abby Shaffer (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) came out and made a save on KU's only shot on cage in the period. The two teams settled for the 0-0 tie at halftime.
Bloomsburg had the only two shots in the third quarter as senior
Foto Tsioles (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) took a shot midway through the third but was stopped by the KU goalie, Katie Dotterweich. McFarland got another shot off but it went wide and the game remained scoreless after 45 minutes of action.
Shaffer made her second save of the game just 4:31 into the fourth quarter to preserve her shutout and sophomore
Alicia Carr (Shickshinny, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) took the only shot of the quarter for the Huskies but the Golden Bears defense was there was to block the shot and send the game into overtime.
Carr tried to put the game away just 17 seconds into action in the first overtime but her shot was saved by Dotterweich to keep the shutout alive. The Golden Bears were awarded a penalty corner 3:32 into the overtime and Rachel Dusman put a shot on cage but Shaffer stuffed the attempt. Freshman
Bella Culp (Dauphin, Pa./Central Dauphin) put a shot on cage with 45 seconds to play in the first overtime but was turned away by Dotterweich and the two teams headed into double overtime.
The Golden Bears were awarded a penalty corner just 1:52 into the second overtime and Izzy Radel collected the corner from Juliana Donato and Alyssa Donato to put a shot just past Shaffer and the win for Kutztown.
The Huskies held a slight 8-7 advantage in shots, while the Golden Bears had a 10-6 advantage in penalty corners. Shaffer and Dotterweich each made three saves in cage.
The Huskies return to action on Sunday, October 3 when they travel to Frostburg, Md. to take on Frostburg State University in a non-conference match up at 12:30 pm.
