Field Hockey Drops Double Overtime Heartbreaker to Bentley

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Bloomsburg University field hockey team dropped a heartbreaker in double overtime, 2-1, to Bentley University, Friday afternoon. The Huskies fell to 0-1 to open the season while Bentley started the year 1-0.

With 8:13 to play in regulation, graduated student Alyssa Broadt (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg Area) collected the ball out of a scramble and pushed a deep shot past the Bentley goalie to knot the game at 1-1. The Falcons had a chance to break the tie with just 1:24 to play in regulation, but junior Abby Shaffer (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) made the save and the next Bentley shot was blocked to keep the game 1-1.

The Falcons got off four shots in the first four minutes of the first overtime period but their initial shot was saved by Shaffer before the next three were blocked by the Huskies defense. Bloomsburg put its own pressure on the Bentley defense as senior Arden Morgans (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) put a shot on cage that was saved by Mia Trottie. After freshman Kara Koch's (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg Area) penalty corner, senior Kristen Robinson (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area) was able to get a shot off but the Bentley defense stepped in for their goalie and made the defensive save. Koch got the final shot of the first overtime period off with just under a minute to play but couldn't put the ball on cage and the two teams went into a second overtime period.

The Falcons finally broke the 1-1 tie just 1:31 into the second overtime as Ava Bevilacqua collected a loose ball out of a scramble after a save by Shaffer and Christine Murray sent it home to give Bentley the 2-1 double overtime win.

Bentley scored the first goal of the game just over seven minutes into the second quarter to give the Falcons a 1-0 advantage that they took into halftime.

Neither team found the back of the cage in the third quarter, though it wasn't without effort from both teams. The Huskies out-shot the Falcons 9-4 in the third, including putting four shots on cage.

For the game, Bloomsburg held a 19-17 advantage in shots and an 11-4 advantage in penalty corners.

Shaffer made 10 saves in 71:31 minutes of action, including five from the fourth quarter on. Shaffer's counterpart, Trottie, made 10 saves for the Falcons, including four in the third quarter.

The Huskies get back to action on Sunday as they travel to AIC for a 1:00 PM contest in Springfield, Mass. Bloomsburg gets back on its home turf on Tuesday, September 7 as the Huskies host Pace University at Steph Pettit Stadium for a 4:00 PM contest.
