Women's Basketball Holds Off West Chester; Wins Seventh-Straight Game

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University women's basketball team outlasted a strong push from West Chester University late in the game to win its seventh-straight match, Saturday afternoon. The Huskies defeated the Golden Rams 61-50 to improve to 11-7 for the year and 9-3 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action. The Golden Rams dropped to 4-10 and 2-6 in conference play.

Bloomsburg held a slight 27-25 lead at halftime and eventually took a 10-point advantage as Emma Saxton (York, Pa./Central York) finished off a driving layup to give Bloomsburg a 41-31 lead with 3:49 to play in the third. However, the Golden Rams hung around and used a 10-run to close out the third and head into the final quarter tied, 41-41.

Meghan Corridoni (Exeter, Pa./Holy Redeemer) opened the fourth with a layup as she grabbed her own offensive rebound and put it back to give Bloomsburg a 43-41 lead with 9:19 to play. The Golden Rams answered immediately and tied the game against at 43-43 at the 8:54 mark. After Katelin Starr (Berwick, PA/Berwick) grabbed a defensive rebound, Corridoni took a pass from Lauren Kirsch (Palmyra, PA/Lower Dauphin) and hit a short jumper to give Bloomsburg a 45-43 lead, one the Huskies did not surrender for the rest of the game.

Corridoni's jumped kicked off a 13-2 run for the Huskies that used just over six minutes of action in the quarter to push their lead to 13, 58-45. The run was punctuated by a pair of free throws from Ella Kale (Spring Grove, PA/Spring Grove) at the 1:12 mark. Leah Johnson halted Bloomsburg's run with a three-pointer of her own to cut the deficit to 10, 58-48, but Saxton hit both of her free throws after being fouled, and Starr hit the back end of her trip to the line to seal the 61-50 win for Bloomsburg.

The Huskies out-scored the Golden Rams 20-9 in that final quarter after West Chester out-scored Bloomsburg 16-14 in the third and 13-8 in the second.

West Chester hit the first bucket of the game, but that lead proved to be the game's only lead for the Golden Rams. The game was tied four times, and the lead changed hands just once as Bloomsburg held an advantage for most of the contest.

Bloomsburg built an eight-point advantage in the first, 15-7, thanks to a three from Kirsch, but the Golden Rams kept it close and used a slight 5-4 run to finish out the first. Bloomsburg did not relinquish the lead in the second quarter, though the Golden Rams made it a two-point game on two occasions – 25-23 with 3:06 to play and 27-25 with 1:46 to go.

The Huskies shot 44.1% (26-for-59) for the game and were 3-of-8 from the three-point range. The Huskies held West Chester to just a 5-for-17 day beyond the arc (29.4%) and their lowest-scoring game of the season against DII opponents.

Saxton led the Huskies with a 20-point, 11 rebound double-double, while Corridoni chipped in 17 points to go with her seven rebounds. Kale dished out a career-best nine assists with four points and five rebounds.

Alexa Abbonizio was the only Golden Ram in double figures as she finished the day with 16 points and was 2-for-7 from the three-point range.

The Huskies out-rebounded West Chester 47-28 and held a 13-8 advantage in offensive boards. Bloomsburg turned its 13 offensive rebounds into 13-second chance points.

Bloomsburg looks to continue its winning streak as the Huskies welcomes Clarion University to Nelson Field House on Monday for a 5:30 pm tilt.
