Women's Basketball Falls to Shippensburg Wednesday Night

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University women's basketball team's eight-game winning streak was snapped at Shippensburg University as the Raiders defeated the Huskies, 79-51, Wednesday evening. Bloomsburg fell to 12-8 for the year and 10-4 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action, while the Raiders improved to 10-7 and 6-5 in the PSAC.
 
The Huskies were led by graduate student Emma Saxton (York, Pa./Central York) with 13 points, three assists, and two steals, while sophomore Megan Fisher (New Holland, Pa./Garden Spot) posted a team-best five rebounds to go with her four points and steal. Freshman Hailey Hudak (Schwenksville, PA/Spring Ford) had a pair of blocks in eight minutes of action to go with three points.
 
As a team, the Huskies shot 36.8% from the field after going 21-for-57 and were 3-for-14 from beyond the arc. Bloomsburg was 6-for-9 from the free-throw line.
 
Meanwhile, the Raiders shot 46.7% from the floor (28-for-60) and were 3-for-7 from the three-point range. Shippensburg was 20-for-24 from the free-throw line, including a perfect 4-for-4 in the final quarter. Shippensburg had four players reach double-digits and were led by Destiny Jefferson with 23 points while Aunbrielle Green finished with 19. Lauren Pettis chipped in 16 points and led the team with 12 rebounds, while Treasure George finished the day with 11 points.
 
Shippensburg won the rebounding battle 47-28 and converted the Huskies' 19 turnovers into 14 points.
 
The Raiders took the lead just 27 seconds in the action before Saxton tied the game at 2-2 during the Huskies' next possession. A pair of free throws gave Shippensburg back the lead, 4-2 before sophomore Emma Gochnauer (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) knocked down a pair of free throws to tie the game for the second time in the quarter. The two teams traded another couple of points for the contest's third and final tie before the Raiders used a 9-5 run to close out the quarter with a 15-11 lead.
 
The four-point deficit was as close as the Huskies could get as Shippensburg used a 15-8 second quarter to take a 30-19 lead into the locker room at the break.
 
The Huskies had their best shooting quarter in the third as they were 53.85% from the floor (7-for-13) and were 2-for-2 from beyond the arc and the free-throw line. Shippensburg matched the Huskies' hot shooting with a solid offensive output of its own. The Raiders went 10-for-15 (66.67%) from the floor and were 2-for-3 from the three-point range. Shippensburg went 5-for-6 from the three-throw line as the Raiders out-scored Bloomsburg 27-18 in the third to take a 57-37 lead going into the final quarter.
 
The Raiders used a 22-14 fourth quarter to seal the 79-51 win.
 
On Saturday, Bloomsburg looks to get back in the win column as the Huskies host Millersville University in a 3:00 pm PSAC contest at Nelson Field House.
