Men's Basketball Holds Off Lock Haven for an 86-79 Win to Open 2022

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University men's basketball team out-lasted Lock Haven University for an 86-79 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) win, Wednesday evening. With the win, the Huskies improved to 3-7 and 2-4 in PSAC play while the Bald Eagles dropped to 4-6 and 1-5 in conference action.
 
The Huskies finished the day with four players in double figures including Travis Elmore (Tobyhanna, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) with a 19-point, 13-rebound double-double. Justin Anderson (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) posted 19 points while Peyton Mortellite (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) finished the day with a season-best 16 points. Hunter Healy (Quakertown PA/Bishop McDevitt) added a career-best 15 points for the Huskies. Justin Rodriguez (Easton, Pa./Morristown-Beard) dished out a season-best 10 assists and pulled down seven boards.
 
As a team, the Huskies shot 47.1% (32-for-68) for the game and were 5-for-16 from beyond the arc. Bloomsburg went 17-for-24 (70.8%) from the free throw line.
 
DaQuan Granberry led Lock Haven with 23 points while MarkAnthony Fidelis posted 17 points and Jesse McPherson pulled down a team-best 12 rebounds. The Bald Eagles shot 31-for-67 (46.3%) from the field for the game and were 8-for-17 from three-point range. Lock Haven finished the day 9-for-14 (64.3%) from the free throw line.
 
With 7:05 to play in the second half, Dymir Montague hit a three-pointer to tie the game for the last time at 62-62. Just over a minute later, Anderson grabbed the defensive board after Healy blocked McPherson and hit a jumper to give the Huskies' the lead for good, 64-62, with 5:58 to play. A three from Anderson on the Huskies' next possession gave Bloomsburg a 67-62 lead. Fidelis hit a shot on the other end of the court to cut the lead back to three, but Elmore answered with a driving layup at the 4:53 mark to give BU a 69-64 lead.
 
The Huskies used a 13-8 run over the next three minutes to take a 10-point advantage, 82-72, with 1:55 to play. McPherson cut the lead back to eight, 82-74, with a dunk and after Fidelis hit a three with 45 seconds to play, the Bald Eagles were within five, 83-78.
 
Bloomsburg closed out the game going 3-for-4 from the free throw line while the Bald Eagles went 1-2 in the last 38 seconds as the Huskies held on for the 86-79 win.
 
The first half played out just like the second as the lead changed hands four times and the game was tied six different times. The Huskies took the lead for good in the first with 5:26 to play as Elmore finished off a fast break with a layup in the paint to give BU a 25-23 lead. Bloomsburg closed out the half on a 13-7 run to take the 38-30 lead into halftime.
 
The score was tied twice in the second half but the Huskies never relinquished the lead in the final 20 minutes.
 
Bloomsburg will be back in action on Saturday as they welcome Mansfield University to Nelson Field House for a 1:00 pm PSAC East showdown.
