WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The No. 13 ranked Bloomsburg University women's soccer team fell to No. 5 ranked West Chester 1-0 in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East contest Saturday afternoon.
The Huskies (8-3, 6-3 PSAC East) were able to get off seven shots throughout the game, but a goal by West Chester's Kiley Kergides in the 54
th minute turned out to be the lone score of the match as the Golden Rams (10-0, 9-0 PSAC East) held Bloomsburg off for the 1-0 victory.
Bloomsburg had the first set of scoring opportunities of the game three minutes in on a pair of corner kicks. On the squad's first corner kick,
Lauren McIntyre (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) was able to get a shot off in the box, but she was turned away by West Chester goalkeeper Hayley McGee as she deflected the McIntyre's header out of bounds. On the ensuing corner kick,
Nicole Varano (Mt. Carmel, Pa./Mt. Carmel) was able to gather a loose ball in the box and get a shot off, but it was blocked by a Golden Rams defender as the team turned away Bloomsburg's offense.
Later in the half, Bloomsburg's
Campbell Power (Souderton, Pa./Souderton Area) sent a close shot towards the net from outside of the box, but her shot sailed out of bounds on the right side of the net.
West Chester's offense was able to create a number of scoring opportunities in the first half and the squad got off eight shots in the frame. Bloomsburg goalkeeper
Riley Spingler (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) had a solid half in net, however, and she racked up five saves to keep the game scoreless at the break.
In the second half, Bloomsburg had a solid chance to score in the 51
st minute on a free kick that was taken by Power, who sent in a nicely-placed ball into the box that was played by
Amanda Stoll (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale). Stoll was able to get a clean shot off from in front of the net, but McGee was able to save the shot and hang onto the ball to neutralize the scoring threat.
On West Chester's ensuing possession, the Golden Rams pushed the ball into the attacking end and the team was rewarded a corner kick in the 54
th minute. West Chester took advantage of the corner kick, which is when Kergides scored her game-winning goal. Kergides gathered a loose ball outside of the box after the corner kick was sent away by Bloomsburg's back line, and her long-range shot found the back of the net when it took a tough bounce in front of the goal after the shot was deflected by a Huskies defender.
The Huskies offense generated two more shots with under 10 minutes to play, but both attempts were saved by McGee as West Chester recorded its sixth shutout win of the season.
Bloomsburg will look to bounce back next week with a pair of home games. The Huskies host Mansfield (2-7-1, 0-7-1 PSAC East) on Wednesday, then they turn around with a home game against Shepherd (4-4-3, 3-4-2 PSAC East) on Saturday.
