SPARKILL, NY – The Bloomsburg University men's soccer team won its sixth straight game after beating St. Thomas Aquinas 3-1 in a non-conference away game Wednesday afternoon.
The Huskies (10-2-1, 5-1-1 PSAC East) got out to an early advantage when
Stephen Hollis (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) scored a goal in the seventh minute on a corner kick that he sent directly into the net over an outstretched St. Thomas Aquinas (4-5-4. 0-2-3 ECC) goalkeeper.
Bloomsburg extended its lead to 2-0 later in the half on another corner kick, and this time it was
Shay Gillen (Archbald, Pa./Valley View) heading the ball into the net after receiving a lob pass that was sent into the box from the corner by
Olly Whitham (Clitheroe, Lancashire, England/Settle College). In the second half,
Sammy Ames (Holly Ridge, N.C./Dixon) put the game away when he scored his fourth goal of the season 12 minutes into the final frame. Ames scored the goal after receiving a pass in front of the net that was delivered by
Anthony Schlee (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley).
St. Thomas Aquinas scored its lone goal of the game in the 85
th minute after Angel Hernandez rebounded a blocked shot and kicked the loose ball into the goal.
Despite the final score, St. Thomas Aquinas outshot Bloomsburg by a final total of 17-16. However, Bloomsburg goalkeeper
Brady Rimple (Cherryville, Pa./Northampton Area) held the Spartans scoreless for 77 minutes and had five saves before being relieved by
Nolan Michaels (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Vincent - St. Mary). Michaels added one save and brought the team's total to six as the Spartans put seven of their 17 shots on goal. Of Bloomsburg's 16 shots, 10 were on goal.
Hollis' game-winning goal keeps his hot streak on offense alive as it was his third goal in two games. The senior defender had two goals and an assist in his last outing against East Stroudsburg, which helped him earn a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division Athlete of the Week award on Monday. On the season, Hollis ranks second on the team in goals with four, and he is one of four players to have four goals this year.
Ames is one of the four players on the team tied with Hollis with four goals after scoring his fourth on Wednesday. Ames has one assist to go along with his four goals, and he is second on the team with 20 shot attempts.
For Gilen, it was his second goal of the season and the freshman also has three assists on the year, which is tied for the second-most on the Huskies so far this season.
Schlee, who recorded his second assist of the year on Wednesday, is the team's leading goal scorer with five. The Huskies have received 32 goals from 12 different players in 13 games this year.
Bloomsburg will be looking to make it seven straight wins when it hosts Lock Haven (5-5-3, 3-2-3 PSAC East) on Saturday. The contest will be the second game of a doubleheader with the women's soccer team, who hosts Millersville at 4:00 PM for Senior Night.
