BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Trailing 23-17 in the first set, freshman
Emma Antigua (Kimball, Minn./Kimball) sparked an eight-point rally to give the Bloomsburg University volleyball team a 25-23 win. The Huskies carried the momentum into a 3-0 sweep of visiting Lock Haven Friday night. The Huskies improved to 5-16 on the year and 3-5 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East action, while the Bald Eagles fell to 1-18 and 1-7 in conference play.
Â
The Huskies swept the Bald Eagles by set scores of 25-23, 25-20, and 25-15.
Â
Down 22-14, the Huskies got the serve thanks to an LHU service error before a kill from Antigua and a block from
Emily Jackson (Dover, N.J./Morris Hills), and Antigua cut the deficit to 22-17. Lock Haven got the serve back after a kill from Kelly Gaston, but Antigua got her fourth kill of the set to kick off an eight-point run for the Huskies with freshman
Hannah Robson (Charlotte, N.C./Arborbrook) on the service line. A couple of unforced Bald Eagle errors, along with two kills from Antigua, a block from
Liz Bopp (Ebensburg, Pa./Central Cambria) and Antigua, and three kills from Bopp, carried the Huskies to a 25-23 set one win.
Â
The Huskies carried the momentum into the second set and kept Bald Eagles off balance. Leading by one, 8-7, senior
Shayna Warfel (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) gave BU a 9-7 lead and kicked off a quick 3-0 run to push the BU lead to 11-7. The Bald Eagles stuck around and cut the lead back to one, 14-13, but four-straight points from the Huskies pushed their lead back to five, 18-13. The Huskies earned their first set point thanks to a block from Espinal and Bopp, but the Bald Eagles got one point back on a BU attacking error. Bopp ended the set with another kill to give Bloomsburg the 25-20 win and a two-set lead.
Â
Lock Haven jumped to a quick 6-3 lead in the final set, but the Huskies fought back. BU cut the lead back to 7-6 before the two teams traded a pair of points to give LHU an 11-8 lead. Bopp sparked the Husky offense with a kill from Espinal as Bloomsburg rattled off 10-straight points with
Bryn Stek (Ambler, Pa./Upper Dublin) serving. The Bald Eagles momentarily halted the BU run with a couple of points before the Huskies closed out the set on a 7-2 run to close out the set 25-15 and the match 3-0.
Â
The Huskies hit .231 as a team, with 42 kills and 17 errors on 108 attempts. The Bloomsburg defense limited the Bald Eagles to a .049 hitting percentage with 24 kills and 19 errors on 103 attempts. The.231 hitting percentage was the Huskies' highest of the season, and the 42 kills were the most in a three-set match this season and just one off the program record for kills in a three-set match.
Â
Robson led the defense with 20 digs, while Espinal finished with 10. The junior setter also dished out 33 assists.
Â
Sydney Buell (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) and Warfel each had 11 kills, while Bopp was perfect on the day with six kills on 10 attempts and no errors. Bopp had a pair of block assists, while Jackson finished with two solo and two assisted blocks.
Â
The Huskies continue a long homestand as they welcome Millersville University to Nelson Field House next Friday, October 21, for a 6:00 p.m. match to kick off Homecoming & Parents and Family Weekend.
