BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The women's soccer team secured its fourth straight shutout win with a 2-0 victory over Millersville on Senior Day at Steph Pettit Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The No. 22 nationally ranked Huskies (12-3, 10-3 PSAC East) were in a scoreless tie with Millersville (1-7-5, 1-6-5 PSAC East) at the half, but that changed quickly in the second half when
Nicole Varano (Mt. Carmel, Pa./Mt. Carmel) scored her ninth goal of the season 92 seconds into the final frame. Varano scored sixth game winner of the season after being set up by
Campbell Power (Souderton, Pa./Souderton Area) and
Molly Groff (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge). Groff sent a cross into the box and Power was able to flip it to her open teammate for the score.
Bloomsburg went on to dominate the rest of the second half as it held the ball for 59% of the final 45 minutes to go along with its eight total shots in the frame. It wasn't until the 75
th minute until the Huskies would get back on the scoreboard, however, and the squad was able to make it a two-score game thanks to a goal by
Kennedy Kilchrist (Southampton, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie). Kilchrist's goal was assisted by
Brooke Foster (Cherry Hill, N.J./Camden Catholic), who put a shot on goal was saved by Millersville goalkeeper Bella Fiorenza and deflected right to Kilchrist in front of the net.
Fiorenza did a nice job in net for the Marauders as she negated five Bloomsburg scoring opportunities in 37 minutes of play with five saves.
For Bloomsburg,
Riley Spingler (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) had five saves and held Millersville scoreless for 87 minutes of play.
Alexa Ryan (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) relieved Spingler in net for the final three minutes of the game and kept the Marauders offense at bey as the Huskies picked up their 11
th shutout of the year.
Kilchrist's goal was her first of the season and she becomes the 11
th different player to score for the Huskies this season. Varano leads the team with nine goals, which also leads the PSAC.
After picking up five saves on five chances, Spingler's save percentage rose to .891, which is the second-highest in the conference. The shutout gives her a goals against average of .408, which is also the second-best in the PSAC.
The Huskies will look to pick up another conference win in their next outing at Lock Haven (3-8-3, 1-8-3 PSAC East) on Wednesday. The game is scheduled to kick off at 6:00 PM and it will be the first game of a three-game road stretch that the Huskies have to close out the season.
