Field Hockey Shuts Out Mercyhurst For Second Time This Season

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University field hockey team welcomed their alums for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) contest on Saturday afternoon. The Huskies defeated Mercyhurst University 2-0 for their second win over the Lakers in the last 10 days. Bloomsburg improved to 6-4 on the year and 1-1 in the PSAC, while the Lakers dropped to 2-7 and 0-1 in conference play.

With 11 seconds to play in the second quarter, the Huskies earned a penalty corner, and sophomore Kara Koch (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg Area) inserted the ball for the Huskies. Bloomsburg kept the ball in the circle even as time expired, and Koch put home a rebound after Emily Swineford (Mt. Pleasant Mills, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) hit a ball off a defender to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead at the break.

After a scoreless third quarter for both teams, the Huskies padded their lead with a goal five minutes into the fourth. Swineford received a strong pass from senior Carlee Williams (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) after another BU penalty corner and the back of the cage for the first time this season.

The Huskies' offense did not back down as they got three more shots off in the final 10 minutes, and their defensive unit kept the Lakers away from senior keeper Abby Shaffer (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin).

Shaffer needed just three saves fifth shutout of the season.

The Huskies out-shot the Lakers 23-3 and held a 13-0 advantage in penalty corners.

Bloomsburg returns to action on Wednesday when the Huskies head to #2 East Stroudsburg for a 3:00 p.m. PSAC contest.
