BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – A pair of second-half scores lifted the Bloomsburg University women's soccer team over Kutztown in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Quarterfinal matchup at Steph Pettit Stadium Monday evening.
After both teams were held scoreless in the first half despite a total of 16 shots being taken,
Lauren Bull (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) gave the Huskies (14-3-2, 11-3-2 PSAC East) their first lead of the game in the second half when she scored with 26:34 remaining in the contest. Then with under seven minutes to play,
Aubrey Hondros (Richboro, Pa./Council Rock South) stretched the team's lead to 2-0 by scoring her second goal of the season.
The 2-0 lead was enough for Bloomsburg and its dominant defense, which held Kutztown (9-5-4, 8-4-4 PSAC East) scoreless for 90 minutes of play to pick up its 11
th shutout of the year.
Despite being held to no goals in the contest, the Golden Bears offense threatened to score often throughout and got out to a great start in the quarterfinals matchup by getting off five of the first seven shots of the game. Four of those shots were saved by senior goalkeeper
Riley Spingler (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy), however, and the other shot was not on target.
Spingler finished the game with nine saves and made several clutch plays, but none proved to be bigger than a sequence of saves she made in the 80
th minute. After intercepting a pass in the attacking end of the field, Kutztown was able to get the ball into scoring position with a cross that went to an open Madison Fey just inside the box. Fey ripped off a shot that Spingler was able to get a hand on and save, but the ball ricocheted to Kutztown's Caroline McDonald right in front of the net. McDonald had a clean shot attempt, but Spingler was able to react quickly for the save and the goalkeeper hung onto the ball to neutralize ths scoring threat and keep Bloomsburg up by one goal.
Four minutes after Spingler's two saves, Hondros extended the team's lead with her goal. Hondros scored her goal with a header after receiving a perfectly placed lob pass in front of the net from
Jess Wanzor (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial), who corralled a loose ball in the attacking end of the field following a Bloomsburg throw in.
Bull's game-winning goal earlier in the game was her third score of the year and second game winner. The junior's goal was set up by
Campbell Power (Souderton, Pa./Souderton Area), who delivered a ball on the ground to Bull while she was boxing out a Kutztown defender. Bull was able to turn around and get a quick shot off that was sent into the top left-hand corner of the goal for the score. Power and
Nicole Varano (Mt. Carmel, Pa./Mt. Carmel) were credited with assists on the play.
Aside from the solid defensive play in net by Spingler, Bloomsburg's back line that consisted of
Lauren McIntyre (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge),
Erin Ranegan (Wilmington, Del./Conrad School of Science),
Lorelei Hartzfeld (Mount Wolf, Pa./Northeastern) and
Gina Sexton (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) all played a huge part in keeping Kutztown scoreless despite the Golden Bears taking a total of 13 shots. The back line blocked a handful of shots in the early going of the first half, and it was able to come away with a few timely tackles to get the ball out of the box on multiple occasions.
The team effort gives Bloomsburg its 14
th victory of the season sends the Huskies into a PSAC Semifinals matchup with Gannon (13-2-4, 11-1-4 PSAC West) on Friday. The Golden Knights are the No. 1 seed for the Western Division and will host two semifinal games on Friday before hosting the championship on Sunday.
