ERIE, Pa. – The Bloomsburg women's soccer team's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference title defense ended Friday night as the Huskies fell to top-seed and PSAC Tournament host Gannon University, 3-1. The Huskies dropped to 14-4-2, while the Knights improved to 14-2-4.
Â
Senior
Campbell Power (Souderton, Pa./Souderton Area) got the first shot on goal off for the game as she placed the ball in the bottom center of the net, but her attempt was stopped by Gannon's goalie Kennedy Solymosi just 3:47 into the game. Sarah Fails' third shot of the game broke the 0-0 tie as she got an assist from Jamie Seneca to give the Knights a 1-0 lead in the 14
th minute.
Â
Gannon added a second goal midway through the first half to grab a 2-0 lead. Power got another shot off, and sophomore Aubrey Honrdos took a shot with 18 minutes to play before the break, but the Huskies couldn't cut into the Gannon lead.
Â
The Knights tacked on another goal three minutes into the second half to push their lead to 3-0. The Huskies' offense struggled to get through the Gannon defense as
Lauren Bull's (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) shot went out the top left at the 50:06 mark. Freshman
Lorelei Hartzfeld (Mount Wolf, Pa./Northeastern) put a shot on net but was turned away by Solymosi to preserve her shutout.
Â
With less than 15 to play in the period, redshirt freshman
Sydney Hoover (Davie, Fla./Western) jostled for the ball with a Gannon defender and drew a foul just inside the 18-yard box in front of the Gannon goal to get her team a penalty kick. Hartzfeld stepped up to the plate for the Huskies. Hartzfeld went top right as the goalie went left, and she buried her PK to cut the lead to 3-1.
Â
Sophomores
Brooke Foster (Cherry Hill, N.J./Camden Catholic) and
Marlee Potillo (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining) each got a shot off as Foster's went out the top, and Solymosi stopped Potillo's attempt as Gannon hung on for the 3-1 win.
Gannon out-shot the Huskies 15-9 for the day and held a slight 6-4 advantage in shots on goal. Saves were even at three apiece between Solymosi and senior
Riley Spingler (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy), while the Knights had a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.
Â
Bloomsburg now waits for the NCAA selection show on Monday in hopes of grabbing an at-large bid. The Huskies look to make their fourth-straight NCAA tournament, as they are
currently ranked fourth in the Atlantic Region.
