Women's Basketball Takes Down Holy Family in an Instant Classic at Nelson Field House

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Huskies erased an 18-point deficit with nine minutes to play in the fourth quarter to force overtime and take down Holy Family, 70-65, Monday night. Bloomsburg improved to 2-0 on the season, while the Tigers dropped to 2-3.

Despite the Tigers taking their largest lead of the game, 50-32, with 9:11 to play thanks to a pair of free throws, the Huskies offense never backed down and chipped away while making key defensive stops. Katie Starr (Berwick, PA/Berwick) tied up the ball on an offensive rebound when the possession arrow favored the Huskies to allow BU to set up another play. After a quick inbound play, Megan Fisher (New Holland, Pa./Garden Spot) kicked the ball out to Emma Gochnauer (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg), who was positioned just beyond the three-point line, and drained her shot to cut the lead to 15, 50-35, with 7:22 to play.

After a pair of good free throws from Starr and another Gochnauer three, the Huskies cut the lead to 10, 50-40, with 5:59 to play. The Tigers momentarily halted the run with a jumper off an offensive board, but Starr put back the rebound off Gochnauer's shot, and Ella Kale (Spring Grove, PA/Spring Grove) forced a turnover and finished the play with a jump shot just outside the paint to make it an eight-point game, 52-44, with 4:02 to play.

Allison Hileman (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) grabbed the defensive rebound on the next Tigers' missed shot, drew a foul to put the Huskies into the bonus, and went to the free throw line. Hileman made both shots, and Starr got a steal as the Tigers tried to move the ball up the court. After a missed layup by the Huskies, Starr pulled down the offensive board and put it back up to get the Huskies to within four. 52-48, with 3:18 to go in regulation.

The Tigers and Huskies traded baskets before Gochnauer knocked down a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to two, 54-52, with less than a minute to play. Lindsay Tretter drained a long three in the corner on Holy Family's next possession to push the Tigers' lead back to five, but Gochnauer answered with a layup, and Starr got a steal to give the Huskies the ball back.

Gochnauer took a shot and was fouled to head to the free-throw line. After hitting the first to cut the lead to two, Ava Morrow grabbed the rebound for Holy Family with 24 seconds left. As Holy Family was trying to set up its play to attempt to run out the clock, the Tigers got called for a traveling violation, and the Huskies had the ball. Lauren Kirsch (Palmyra, PA/Lower Dauphin) drew a foul with 1.4 seconds left on the clock and headed to the free-throw line. Kirsch knocked down both shots and tied the game 57-57. The Bloomsburg defense swarmed the Tigers and did not allow a clean inbound pass to send the game into overtime.

After being out-scored 26-9 in the third quarter, the Huskies out-scored Holy Family 25-9 in the fourth.

Holy Family got the first basket of overtime, but a pair of free throws from Starr and a three-pointer from Kirsch gave Bloomsburg a 62-59 lead, the Huskies' first lead since the halftime break. With 24 seconds to go in overtime, the Tigers cut the lead to one, 66-65, but Bloomsburg closed out the game with four-straight free throws to close out the game. Starr hit a pair with 11 seconds to play to seal the win.
Holy Family out-scored the Huskies 13-11 in the first quarter, but Bloomsburg answered with a 12-9 second quarter to take a 23-22 lead into the break before the two lopsided quarters in the second half.

Starr led the Huskies with a double-double behind 16 points and 11 rebounds, including six offensive boards. She added three steals and a block for the Huskies. Gochnauer chipped in 15 points, and Kale finished with 14 and three assists, while Kirsch came off the bench for 11 points.

The Huskies shot 38.0% for the game and were 25-for-28 (89.3%) from the free-throw line. Holy Family was 34.8% from the field and just 57.9% (11-for-19) from the free throw line. The Tigers shot 66.7% from the field in the third quarter (10-for-15), though Bloomsburg held them to a 20.0% (3-for-15) fourth and a 22.2% (2-for-9) over time. The Huskies shot 53.8% (7-for-13) from the field in the fourth.
