SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Bloomsburg women's basketball team battled tough with Slippery Rock University but fell to the Rock, 62-46, in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover action Monday.
Freshman
Kelly Leszcynski (Narareth, Pa./Nazareth) led the Huskies (2-6, 0-4 PSAC) with a career-best 14 points behind a 4-for-10 day from the field and a 3-for-7 performance beyond the arc. Leszcynski was 3-for-4 from the foul line and finished the day with five rebounds and two assists. Freshman
Abby Brown (Phillipsburg, N.J./Bethlehem Catholic) was 4-for-9 from the field and 1-for-1 from the charity stripe for nine points for the Huskies, while sophomore
Katie Starr (Berwick, PA/Berwick) led the team with eight rebounds and chipped in three points.
As a team, the Huskies shot 26.3% (15-for-57) from the field, were 6-for-25 (24.0%) from three-point range for the game, and got 19 points off the bench and 11 points off Slippery Rock turnovers.
After the two teams were even 10-10 after the first quarter, the Rock hit the first shot of the second to take a 12-10 lead just six seconds into the period. Leszcynski hit a three on the Huskies' first possession of the quarter and eventually took a 12-point lead thanks to a 16-4 run that took five and a half minutes of game time. Slippery Rock cut the lead back to nine, 26-17, with 4:26 to play before sophomore
Hailey Hudak (Schwenksville, PA/Spring Ford) hit a pair of free throws to push the Bloomsburg lead back to 11, 28-17, with 3:38 to play before the half. Hudak converted another trip to the line to give Bloomsburg its largest lead of the game, 30-17, at the 3:01 mark before SRU closed out the quarter on a six-point run to get the deficit to seven, 30-23, at the break.
Slippery Rock took the lead for good with an 11-0 run to open the third quarter and lead 34-30 with 5:18 to play in the quarter. Leszcynski halted the SRU run with a jumper at the 5:06 mark, but the Rock staved off any comeback attempt from the Huskies and led 42-37 with 10 minutes to play after the third.
The Rock led by as many as 18, 62-44, and the Huskies closed out the game with a pair of free throws from Leszcynski to bring the score to its final, 62-46.
Slippery Rock shot 42.6% (26-for-61) from the field and was 3-for-9 from three-point range. The Rock scored 20 points off Bloomsburg turnovers and got 16 points from their bench.
The Huskies have the next week off before returning to the hardwood after the holidays. Bloomsburg hosts Edinboro in a PSAC crossover contest on December 30 at 1:00 p.m.
