Women's Basketball Drops Defensive PSAC Battle to Slippery Rock

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Bloomsburg women's basketball team battled tough with Slippery Rock University but fell to the Rock, 62-46, in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover action Monday.

Freshman Kelly Leszcynski (Narareth, Pa./Nazareth) led the Huskies (2-6, 0-4 PSAC) with a career-best 14 points behind a 4-for-10 day from the field and a 3-for-7 performance beyond the arc. Leszcynski was 3-for-4 from the foul line and finished the day with five rebounds and two assists. Freshman Abby Brown (Phillipsburg, N.J./Bethlehem Catholic) was 4-for-9 from the field and 1-for-1 from the charity stripe for nine points for the Huskies, while sophomore Katie Starr (Berwick, PA/Berwick) led the team with eight rebounds and chipped in three points.

As a team, the Huskies shot 26.3% (15-for-57) from the field, were 6-for-25 (24.0%) from three-point range for the game, and got 19 points off the bench and 11 points off Slippery Rock turnovers.

After the two teams were even 10-10 after the first quarter, the Rock hit the first shot of the second to take a 12-10 lead just six seconds into the period. Leszcynski hit a three on the Huskies' first possession of the quarter and eventually took a 12-point lead thanks to a 16-4 run that took five and a half minutes of game time. Slippery Rock cut the lead back to nine, 26-17, with 4:26 to play before sophomore Hailey Hudak (Schwenksville, PA/Spring Ford) hit a pair of free throws to push the Bloomsburg lead back to 11, 28-17, with 3:38 to play before the half. Hudak converted another trip to the line to give Bloomsburg its largest lead of the game, 30-17, at the 3:01 mark before SRU closed out the quarter on a six-point run to get the deficit to seven, 30-23, at the break.

Slippery Rock took the lead for good with an 11-0 run to open the third quarter and lead 34-30 with 5:18 to play in the quarter. Leszcynski halted the SRU run with a jumper at the 5:06 mark, but the Rock staved off any comeback attempt from the Huskies and led 42-37 with 10 minutes to play after the third.
