Women's Basketball Falls to Edinboro Despite Fourth Quarter Surge

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Despite a strong fourth-quarter comeback attempt, the Bloomsburg women's basketball team fell to Edinboro, 85-70, Friday afternoon. The Huskies dropped to 2-7 and 0-5 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action while the Fighting Scots improved to 7-3 and 4-1 in the conference.

Sophomore Katie Starr (Berwick, PA/Berwick) led the team with a season-best 18 points and eight rebounds while Ella Kale (Spring Grove, PA/Spring Grove) finished with 12 points and seven boards. Sophomore Lauren Kirsch (Palmyra, PA/Lower Dauphin) posted 13 points and four assists for BU.

As a team, the Huskies shots 44.4% from the field (24-for-54) and were 7-for-13 (53.8%) from long range. Blooms burg was 71.4% (15-for-21) from the free throw line and out-rebounded Edinboro 45-29.
 
The Fighting Scots shot 40.8% (29-for-71) from the field and were 20-for-25 (80%) from the free throw line. Edinboro converted the Huskies 35 turnovers into 33 points for the game.
 
The Fighting Scots built a 5-0 lead early in the first quarter before the Huskies scored seven unanswered points to take a 7-5 lead, capped by a three from Kirsch. The lead changed hands five more times in the quarter before Fisher made her final free throw of the first to tie the game at 17-17 at the first break.
 
Morgan Gentile hit a jumper in the first 31 seconds of the second quarter to give the Fighting Scots a 19-17 lead. Bloomsburg battled back to tie the game 22-22 and take a 23-22 lead thanks to a pair of free throws from Emma Gochnauer (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) with 6:52 to play in the second quarter. Edinboro retook the lead on its next possession and pushed the lead to three, 26-23, with 5:41 to play. The Huskies chipped away and took a 27-26 lead at the 4:55 mark before Edinboro took the lead for good, 28-27, with 4:14 to play before the break. Edinboro held off the Huskies and took a 40-35 lead into halftime.
 
Edinboro led by as many as 15 with 2:19 to play in third, 61-46, before the Kale hit a three to cut the lead to 61-49 with 1:25 to play. The Fighting Scots hit the final bucket of the quarter to take a 63-49 lead into the final frame.
 
The Huskies kept fighting and made it a seven-point game, 70-63, with 4:43 to play thanks to a layup from Gochnauer but a layup on the other end of the court from Rana Elhusseini for Edinboro pushed their lead back to nine, 72-63, and her two free throws at the 3:49 mark gave the Fighting Scots a 74-63 lead. Kirsch made it a single-digit game once again with 2:08 to play, 76-68, but Edinboro closed out the game on a 9-2 run to seal the 85-70 win.
 
Elhusseini led all players with 29 points for the game.
 
The Huskies return to action on Wednesday, January 4 with their first PSAC East opponent as Bloomsburg hosts Millersville for a 5:30 pm contest at Nelson Field House.
