BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg men's basketball team hung with Edinboro during a home Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover game Friday afternoon, and despite the Huskies cutting a double-digit deficit to just three points with under two minutes remaining, the Fighting Scots were able to hang on for a 71-62 victory.
The Huskies (0-9, 0-5 PSAC) faced its largest deficit of the game with 4:42 remaining as they trailed by 12 points, but a quick 10-1 scoring run by Bloomsburg made it a 63-60 game with 1:51 to go in the contest. The scoring run was capped off with a layup by
Louie Wild (Philadelphia, PA/Roman Catholic), who had seven points during the run and finished the game with 22 points in 32 minutes off the bench, which was just three points shy from tying his career high.
Edinboro (4-6, 2-1 PSAC) responded to Bloomsburg's scoring run with a bucket by Naim Miller. Miller was able to drive past a couple Bloomsburg defenders and make a layup to make it a two-possession game at 65-60. On Bloomsburg's next possession, Edinboro was able to get a big stop after blocking a pair of shots and coming up with a defensive rebound. The Huskies were then forced to foul, and the Fighting Scots sank one-of-two free throws to make the score 66-60. Edinboro blocked a shot on the ensuing possession and forced a turnover on the next possession while icing the game with free throws.
Wild led all Bloomsburg players with 22 points and was 9-for-20 from the field to go along with a steal, block and assist.
Cam Villarouel (Cumming, GA/State College (PA)) had 15 points, three steals and four rebounds in 35 minutes.
Jake Nelson (West Chester, Pa./West Chester Rustin) was the third and final player in double figures for Bloomsburg as the senior forward finished with 11 points and seven rebounds.
Ash Kemble (Myerstown, Pa./Fork Union Military Academy) had a team-high 10 rebounds to go along with eight points.
The Huskies started the game off with a hot shooting performance from the floor as they made their first three field goal attempts of the game to go up by a score of 6-2. After another quick 5-2 run, Bloomsburg led 11-4 nearly five minutes into the game and the seven-point lead would be tied for its largest of the contest.
Bloomsburg again led by seven points with 10:13 in the first half after a shot by Wild, but Edinboro would go on a 19-4 scoring run over the course of the next seven minutes to gain its first lead of the contest. The run made the score 31-24 with 3:28 to play before halftime, and the Fighting Scots would hang onto that advantage for the rest of the game despite Bloomsburg's late comeback attempt.
For Edinboro, Miller led the squad with 20 points and was 8-for-12 from the charity stripe. Domonique Keyes finished with a double-double as he recorded 16 points and 12 boards to go along with two blocks, two steals and an assist. Kierell Green and Will Taylor added nine points apiece as the Fighting Scots shot 39.7% (23-58) from the field.
Bloomsburg shot the ball well in the first half at 44.83%, but Edinboro held the Huskies to just 36.36% shooting in the second half. For the game, Bloomsburg finished 25-62 (40.3%) from the floor.
The Huskies will return to action with a home game against Millersville (6-4, 3-1 PSAC) on Wednesday, Jan. 4. The game is scheduled to tip off at 7:30 PM inside the Nelson Field House.
