Comeback Falls Just Short as Men's Basketball Drops PSAC East Contest to Millersville

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Bloomsburg out-scored Millersville 43-41 in the second half, but the Marauders hung on for a 70-60 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East win over the Huskies Wednesday night.

With 6:01 to play, senior Jake Nelson (West Chester, Pa./West Chester Rustin) drove to the basket after sophomore Dylan Harris (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) grabbed a steal. Nelson finished his layup, drew the foul to complete the traditional three-point play, and cut the Marauder lead to seven, 54-47, with 5:33 to play in the second half. Justin Nwosu answered with a three-point play to push the Millersville lead back to 10, 57-47, with 5:09 on the clock. Sophomore Cam Villarouel (Cumming, GA/State College (PA)) and Matt Dade traded baskets to keep the Marauder lead in double digits before Dade pushed the Millersville lead to 12, 61-49, at the 3:58 mark.

The Marauders used a 9-4 run over the next two minutes to push their lead to 17, 70-53, with less than two minutes to play. Nelson hit a three to halt the Millersville run and cut the lead to 70-56 with 1:31 to play. Ryan Davis missed a jumper on the other end of the court, and Nelson grabbed the defensive board to get possession back to the Huskies with under a minute on the clock. Graduate student Desmond Freeman (Greensboro, N.C./Southeast Guilford) immediately went down the court, drove to the basket to finish a layup, and cut into the deficit, 70-58, with 50 seconds left. Dade turned the ball over, and Keith Mency fouled Freeman on the Huskies' next possession. Freeman hit both free throws to get the Huskies within 10, 70-60, but Bloomsburg couldn't force the turnover over on the last possession, and Millersville hung on for the 70-60 win.

The Huskies raced out to a 12-6 lead in the first half thanks to six points from Nelson and a three from Harris. The Marauders used a 7-0 run to take their first lead of the game, 13-12, with 10:05 to play in the first. Nelson ended the run with a jumper in the paint for Bloomsburg's 14-13 lead. The lead changed hands three more times in the next five minutes before Millersville took the lead for good, 21-17, with 3:53 to play before halftime. Millersville ended the half on an 8-0 run to take a 29-17 advantage into the break.

The Marauders maintained their double-digit lead for most of the second half until Nelson's layup at the 5:33 mark in the second.

The Huskies shot 44.9% from the field (22-for-49) for the game but were 15-for-28 (53.57%) in the second half. Bloomsburg was 11-for-15 from the free-throw line.

Freeman and Nelson led the Huskies with 16 points each, while Ash Kemble (Myerstown, Pa./Fork Union Military Academy) finished with 15 points. Kemble and Nelson each had eight rebounds and Kemble had two blocks.

Millersville out-rebounded the Huskies 40-33 and shot 41.4% (29-for-70) from the field. The Marauders were 9-for-14 (64.3%) from the free throw line for the game.
