BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University women's basketball team fell 64-54 to Shippensburg Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at Nelson Field House.
The exciting contest saw the Huskies overcome a double-digit deficit in the third quarter and take a lead before the Red Raiders were able to battle back in the fourth for the win.
Meghan Corridoni (Exeter, Pa./Holy Redeemer) had a double-double for Bloomsburg as she led the team with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Megan Fisher (New Holland, Pa./Garden Spot) and
Emma Saxton (York, Pa./Central York) added 11 points each.
Katelin Starr (Berwick, PA/Berwick) finished with seven points and six boards while
Lauren Kirsch (Palmyra, PA/Lower Dauphin) had six points off the bench.
Both teams struggled in the first quarter generating offense as both teams combined to make eight total field goals in the opening period. Shippensburg made the first two baskets to take an early 5-0 lead, but Bloomsburg would go on 7-0 run that was capped off by a Corridoni three to give the Huskies their first lead of game. Shippensburg made two field goals to regain the lead and after the two teams traded baskets, the Red Raiders led 11-9 by the end of the period.
The second quarter saw plenty of back-and-forth action as Shippensburg retained its two-point lead after six minutes of play. With the game at 19-17 under four minutes to go, the Red Raiders would grab some momentum as they went on a 12-2 run to make the score 31-19. A three-point field goal by
Megan Fisher (New Holland, Pa./Garden Spot) closed the gap to 31-22 at the half.
The second half began with Shippensburg knocking down a free throw to regain a double-digit lead, but the rest of the third quarter would belong to Bloomsburg. The Huskies knocked down six consecutive free throws on three different trips to the line in order to make it a two-possession game with 6:19 left to play. Two minutes later, a defensive stop by the Huskies was followed up by a field goal by Starr to bring the game back within two. Fisher knocked down a free throw on the team's next possession and following a Shippensburg turnover, Kirsch made a three to give Bloomsburg its first lead since the first quarter. The Red Raiders went 1-of-2 from the line on the ensuing possession and Corridoni buried another three on the other end to reclaim the lead. Shippensburg was able to score with under a minute to play to tie things up at 45 by the end of the quarter. Bloomsburg outscored Shippensburg 23-14 in the frame.
The Huskies opened up the fourth quarter with a field goal by Starr on their opening possession to take another two-point lead, however, that would be the team's final lead as Shippensburg responded by going on a quick 10-2 run to take a 55-49 lead. Kirsch converted a big three with under three minutes to play to make it 55-52, but the Red Raiders scored on their next three possessions to quickly gain a nine-point lead. Bloomsburg would only make one more field goal with under a minute to play and Shippensburg knocked down its final four free throws to put the game at 64-54.
Shippensburg was led in scoring by Destiny Jefferson as the senior guard had 24 points and was the lone Red Raider in double figures. Jefferson also had 10 rebounds for a double-double. Aunbrielle Green led all players with 12 rebounds and was one point away from a double-double, finishing with nine total points. As a team, Shippensburg went 19-21 from the free-throw line.
Bloomsburg had its highest shooting percentage in the third quarter, which is when the team went 6-14 (42.86%) from the floor and had 23 points. Bloomsburg shot under 30% for the game from the floor as the team was 17-61. Defensively, the team caused 19 turnovers and was able to score 13 points off those miscues.
Bloomsburg (18-9, 16-5 PSAC) will return to action on Wednesday with an away game at Kutztown (28-5, 16-3 PSAC). The Huskies are currently No. 2 in the PSAC East behind Kutztown. The contest will be the regular season finale for Bloomsburg while the Golden Bears play at Shippensburg next Saturday for their final contest.
