Baseball Splits Home Twin Bill Against University of the Sciences

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University baseball team split a home doubleheader against University of the Sciences on Monday at Bloomsburg Area High School.

The Huskies rode the arm of freshman pitcher Scott Gilbert (Scranton, Pa./Abington Heights) in game one and scored a run in four consecutive innings to come away with a 4-2 victory. Gilbert threw five innings, struck out seven and allowed just one earned run on six hits to come away with his first collegiate win on the mound. Logan Hile (Winfield, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) entered the game in relief and picked up a save by throwing two scoreless innings. Hile struck out two and did not allow a hit.

Offensively, the Huskies got their first lead of the game in the bottom of the second when Adam Gates (Swedesboro, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) knocked in Anthony Viggiano (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) on a single up the middle. Then in the third, Viggiano knocked in Kyle OFier (Pittston Township, Pa./Pittston Area) on a single to extend their lead to 2-0. Carter Chasanov (Magnolia, Del./Polytech) had an RBI single in the fourth and the Huskies scored another run in the fifth on a throwing error at third base. Brandon Ernst (Limerick, Pa./Spring Ford) stole third on the play and crossed home on the errant throw to give Bloomsburg a 4-0 lead. The Devils were able to piece together a few runs in the sixth as the team scored on an RBI single and sacrifice fly, but the two runs would be the only scores as the Huskies held on for the 4-2 win.

Game two played out similarly, but with University of the Sciences in control early on this time and Bloomsburg nearly knotting things up in the final inning. The Devils scored the first five runs of the game and received a solid outing on the mound by Ian Glass, who allowed just three hits in 5.1 innings to ultimately earn the win.

Trailing 5-0 entering the bottom-half of the fifth, the Huskies' offense answered with some runs to cut into the deficit. Following two batters getting hit by a pitch and a walk, Chasanov scored two runners on a single to make it a 5-2 game. Then in the sixth, Ernst got on base by way of a walk, advanced to third on a Viggiano double, then scored on a fielder's choice that was hit by Adam Gates (Swedesboro, N.J./Gloucester Catholic). Viggiano advanced to third on the fielder's choice and was able to score on a wild pitch to make it a one-run game at 5-4 after the sixth inning. The Huskies again threatened in the seventh inning when Chasanov got on base with a one-out single and advanced to second after OFier drew a walk in the next at bat. However, Devils pitcher Ishaan Patel was able to get out of the jam by recording a strike out and fly out to centerfield to end the game with the winning run left on first.

Viggiano led the day offensively for the Huskies as he went 3-5 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored and an RBI. Chasanov finished the day 3-7 with three RBI while OFier had the team's only other extra-base hit with a double in the opening game.

Bloomsburg (2-2, 0-0 PSAC) will return to the field on Friday with a doubleheader on the road at Newport News Apprentice School (2-5, 0-0 EMAC). The first game will begin at 1:00 PM.
