HAMPTON, Va. – The Bloomsburg University baseball team swept Newport News Apprentice School in a doubleheader Friday afternoon at War Memorial Stadium in Hampton, Virginia.
The Huskies overcame a one-run deficit by scoring a five runs over the course of the third, fourth and fifth innings to come away with a 5-1 victory in game one. The second game was all Bloomsburg as the squad tallied nine runs on 10 hits and held Newport News Apprentice School scoreless for a 9-0 win.
The Huskies homered five times throughout the day as Adam Gates (Swedesboro, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) had a solo shot and Ben Newbert (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Harriton) hit a three-run home run in the first game. Gates had another solo HR in game two while Tyler Wiik (Fogelsville, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) and Carter Chasanov (Magnolia, Del./Polytech) joined the club with a pair of long balls.
Michael Standen (Drexel Hill, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) started the first game and was given the win after striking out seven hitters in 2.1 innings and allowing just one earned run on three hits. Kelly Holdren (Millville, Pa./Millville Area) made an appearance in relief and allowed one hit in 3.2 innings while striking out six. Logan Hile (Winfield, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) also tossed one scoreless inning. Game two saw Dylan Lubinski (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury) get the win after throwing 4.2 innings, allowing three hits, no earned runs and striking out seven. Nate Baranski (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) threw 2.1 innings as both pitchers kept the Builders off the scoreboard for the 9-0 shutout victory.
The first game began with Newport News Apprentice School taking a 1-0 lead after scoring in the bottom of the first inning. In the top of the third, the Huskies answered by posting three runs on the scoreboard thanks to Newbert's first homer of the day. Carter Chasanov (Magnolia, Del./Polytech) and Gates scored in the fourth and fifth innings to give Bloomsburg two insurance runs and the Builders' offense, which had just four hits in the game, wasn't able to score for the remainder of the game. Brady Gibble (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) was 2-3 with a double as Kyle OFier (Pittston Township, Pa./Pittston Area) and Brandon Ernst (Limerick, Pa./Spring Ford) also recorded hits in the 5-1 victory.
Game two saw more offensive firepower by the Huskies as the team scored two runs in both the second and third innings before adding three more in the fourth to take a 7-0 lead after four innings of play. Chasanov was 2-3 with a home run, a double, a pair of runs batted in, and a run scored. Jake Reed (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) also had a two-hit game with two RBI and scored once. Gates had two extra-base hits with one being his second homer of the day and the other being a double. Wiik gave the Huskies another homer in the game while Newbert, Brandon Ernst (Limerick, Pa./Spring Ford) and Gibble all added an RBI to the team's nine-run performance. One run would've been enough to win the second game as Lubinski and Baranski held the Builders scoreless and to just five hits.
The Huskies (4-2, 0-0 PSAC) will play Newport News Apprentice School (2-8, 0-0 EMAC) for a single game on Saturday at 12:00 PM. The contest will be played at War Memorial Stadium in Hampton, Virginia.
